The last team led by a privateer on the paddock for a long time was the famous Williams Grand Prix racing team. The team formerly owned by Frank Williams had a hard time in the first decade of its existence. The team wasn't very successful until Patrick Head arrived.

Williams was involved in F1 since 1969. Their first F1 victory was the 1979 British F1 GP, with Clay Regazzoni. In 1979, they were the first team to discover the effect of the diffuser at the back of the car, which made their cars almost two seconds a lap faster than all other cars on the grid.

Williams, once consistent champions, have been languishing near the foot of the table after a miserable 10 years since 2004. However, their name and their brand are rivaled only by Ferrari and McLaren, and their fan base is one of the largest on the grid. With 2014 looking more positive, there is a feeling that Williams are back.

The 1980’s and 90’s brought high levels of success for the team founded by Sir Frank Williams in 1977. They were regular champions during the 1980’s and 90’s, widely believed to be the sports finest era, and had drivers such as Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Damon Hill all winning races and championships.

However time hasn’t been kind to Williams who have not won a championship since 1997 and have suffered at the hands of rule changes and the financial importance in the sport.

If races were decided on popularity then Williams would win hands down, thanks mainly to founder and team principle Sir Frank Williams. Williams has been wheel chair bound since a bad car accident in 1986, but he has still attended most of the grands prix. Now into his seventies his roles are becoming fewer and fewer but he is still a popular figure in the F1 paddock.

Since their glory days of the 1990’s Williams have declined. A couple of seasons challenging Michael Schumacher and Ferrari aside, the team have been largely a mid-table outfit battling for the lower points.

Their last win was the Spanish grand prix of 2012 by Pastor Maldonado. It was the only podium and win for the driver from Venezuela of his career. But the rule changes of 2014, and the Mercedes power-unit and brought Williams back into contention. What a wonderful story it would be if they could start winning again.

Unfortunately Williams wasn't able to win a race in 2014, 2015 and 2016. But they did finish 3rd on the 2014 & 2015 constructors championship table. In 2016 they had a lot of competition from Force India and could only score 1 podium to end on 5th place.

Williams 3rd places in the constructors championship in 2014 & .2015 where very strong achievements by the team with 1/3 of the budget of top teams like Mercedes and Ferrari. The driver pair Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa preformed very well. in 2014 they even won 9 podiums with a double podium in the last race at Abu Dhabi. In 2015 Williams won 4 podiums.

The 2016 and 2017 seasons were less successful. Williams ended up 5th in the championship with only one podium in each season.

The 2018 season was very disastrous for the team from Grove. This was the season that the Halo was introduced. They had Sergey Sirotkin and Lance Stroll as their race drivers and only scored 7 points and finished 11th and last in the constructors' championship. It was the worst championship since 1976 when they the team ended up as 17th.

The 2019 season saw Williams with an all-new driver lineup, with F2 champion George Russell and the return to F1 of Grand Prix-winner Robert Kubica.

The Polish driver scored a point in the 2019 German grand prix, which was the only point Williams could score in the entire season.

Nicholas Latifi replaced Kubica for the 2020 season, but the team continued to struggle. Williams finished a season without points for the first time in its history in Formula 1 (since 1977) as Russell and Latifi could not put the car in the Top 10 in any event of the 2020 campaign.

The 2021 season was a lot better, with the team finishing in eighth place in the WCC with 23 points (its best tally since 2017) and even recording a podium finish.

Williams scored twice with both cars in 2021, and the podium came after Russell qualified second for the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. Race Direction canceled the race on Sunday due to the rain, but still handed out points for the positions set in qualifying.

It was Williams' first podium since the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

As Russell joined Mercedes in 2022, Alexander Albon returned to a full-time F1 seat with Williams. Albon scored points with Williams for the first time in the 2022 Australian grand prix, when a solid drive and a great strategy gave him P10.

The COVID-19 virus ended an era of privateer teams. As the Williams family sold the team for €152 million to an investors' firm based in the US called Dorilton Capital.

The 2022 Formula 1 season saw the team score only eight points and finish 10th in the World Constructors' Standings. Alex Albon led the team with three scoring efforts, while Latifi grabbed two points at Suzuka and Nyck De Vries scored at Monza after replacing Albon due to a health problem.

For the 2023 campaign, the team stayed with Alexander Albon, while Nicholas Latifi lost his seat, as the team announced on 23 September 2022,

American driver Logan Sargeant, a race-winner in F2, was announced as Latifi's replacement on 21 November 2022.

Under the direction of James Vowles, who came from Mercedes, the 2023 season was the best for Williams since 2017, both in terms of points scored (28) and position in the World Constructors' Championship (seventh).

For the 2024 F1 season, Williams presented the livery of its challenger, the FW46, on 5 February 2024.
