Consolidation and a New American Chapter

The Williams FW45 arrived in 2023 as the team sought to build on the foundations laid by its predecessors. The car represented continued refinement of the ground-effect concept Williams had embraced from the 2022 rules reset, with updates to aerodynamics, suspension geometry, and packaging. While the team was not yet among the consistent points scorers, there were encouraging moments throughout the season, and the FW45 confirmed that Williams was tracking an upward trajectory, even if the pace of progress remained frustratingly gradual against the well-resourced midfield competitors.

Albon Continues to Impress

Alex Albon remained the team's focal point in 2023, regularly outperforming the car's expected performance window. His racecraft and tyre management ability allowed him to bring home points on multiple occasions, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most underrated drivers on the grid. Albon's ability to nurse a Williams into the top ten on Sundays, particularly when the strategy aligned, kept the team's spirits high and provided useful benchmarking data for the development team back in Grove. His performances continued to attract attention from rival teams and underscored how important a capable, experienced driver is to a team still finding its feet.

Sargeant's Rookie Season

Logan Sargeant became the first American driver to start a Formula 1 season for over a decade when he joined the FW45 programme. The rookie faced the enormous challenge of coming to terms with eighteen Formula 1 circuits while simultaneously adapting to Williams' team culture and development process. Some impressive qualifying laps suggested natural pace, but consistency proved elusive and he struggled to convert potential into points on race day with any regularity. Williams continued to support Sargeant's development, viewing his tenure as a longer-term project aligned with growing the sport's audience in North America.
