A Meaningful Step Forward for Williams

Built on the foundations of its 2020 predecessor, the Williams FW43B carried forward the development work that had brought the team back into contention with the lower midfield. The B-spec designation reflected a series of refined updates rather than a wholesale redesign, but the improvements were tangible. Williams scored points on multiple occasions in 2021, ended the year ninth in the Constructors' Championship, and demonstrated that Dorilton Capital's investment was beginning to translate into on-track gains. It was also the final season for a driver partnership that had served the team well through difficult times.

The Spa Miracle and Russell's Rising Star

The Belgian grand prix at Spa-Francorchamps provided one of the season's most surreal episodes. Persistent rain and poor visibility caused the race to be red-flagged almost immediately after the formation lap and it was never restarted, yet race control declared a result based on the laps completed. George Russell, who had qualified a stunning second on the drenched Ardennes circuit, was awarded a podium finish, his first and, controversially, a result that many in the paddock felt was somewhat hollow given no racing actually took place. Nonetheless, it was a testament to Russell's sublime wet-weather ability and the FW43B's aerodynamic competence in the tricky conditions. Russell departed at season's end to join Mercedes, his trajectory confirmed.

Latifi Scores and the Grove Revival Continues

Nicholas Latifi contributed points finishes of his own in 2021, most notably in Hungary where the chaos of the opening lap brought him into the points. The broader picture showed a Williams team rebuilding its infrastructure, developing its wind tunnel tools, and recruiting new technical talent under the Dorilton ownership. The FW43B's season gave real hope that the 2022 regulatory reset would provide an opportunity to close the gap to the teams that had left Williams behind in the preceding years.
