Hockenheim on 22 July 2012 saw Alonso take pole in a rain-affected Q3 with a 1:40.621 lap, Vettel second by 0.405, Webber third for a Red Bull second row, Schumacher fourth for Mercedes GP on home soil.
Race day: Vettel penalised, Button hunts Alonso
Alonso led from lights out and controlled the race for the full 67 laps, Button chasing on a different strategy but never able to close within threatening range. Vettel crossed the line second but was demoted to fifth after a 20-second penalty for illegally passing Button off-track at the hairpin. Raikkonen inherited third for Lotus, Kobayashi fourth for Sauber (missing his first F1 podium by 1.5 seconds), Perez sixth, Schumacher seventh. Schumacher set the fastest lap on lap 57 at 1:18.725.
Championship: Alonso 154, Webber 116, Vettel 110
Alonsos lead was 34 points; the Ferrari with its Coke-bottle sidepod upgrade was now consistently the class of the field on Sunday, if not always on Saturday. Hungary in a week would be next.
