1970 F1 Championship Standings
Jochen Rindt clinched his first and only Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship in 1970 with 45 points, taking five wins, five podiums and three pole positions along the way. The Austrian driver finished just five points clear of Jacky Ickx. The Constructors' Championship, however, went not to Rindt's Team Lotus but to Lotus-Ford, who took their fourth title with 59 points and six race wins.
Both championships were settled at the same race, the USA Grand Prix (round 12 of 13): Rindt took the drivers' crown and Lotus-Ford the constructors'.
The 1970 season remains one of Formula 1’s most haunting chapters. Rindt had turned the radical Lotus 72 into the car to beat, winning five races before losing his life during practice for the Italian grand prix at Monza. ’s Jacky Ickx kept the title fight alive, but when he failed to win at Watkins Glen, Rindt became Formula 1’s only posthumous World Champion. Emerson Fittipaldi’s victory that day also helped Lotus seal the Constructors’ title, giving the team glory in a season marked as much by tragedy as brilliance.
