2012 Britain F1 Grand Prix Race Report & Results

Event: Great Britain Grand Prix
Track: Silverstone Circuit
Weather: wet qualifying, dry race
Mark Webber won his 9th F1 World Championship race at the 2012 Britain F1 GP, a second Silverstone victory to add to his 2010 win. The Red Bull driver started second and won by 3.060 seconds from Fernando Alonso for Ferrari. It was Red Bulls 29th F1 win.
Alonso pole in the wet, three seconds clear before red flag
Silverstone on 8 July 2012 saw Fernando Alonso take pole for Ferrari with a 1:51.746 lap in a rain-hit Q3, Webber second by 0.047 for Red Bull, Schumacher third for Mercedes GP, Vettel fourth. The race weekend had been a mud bath, with heavy overnight rain forcing spectators away from many campsites.
Race day: Webber past Alonso with fresher tyres in the closing laps
Alonso led from lights out through a dry Sunday race, holding Webber comfortably for most of the 52 laps. But the Australians tyre call, running to a longer final stint, paid dividends: Webber closed inexorably in the final ten laps and passed Alonso with four to go for the lead. Alonso settled for second in front of a bemused home crowd expecting a Ferrari win, Vettel third for Red Bull, Massa fourth for Ferrari, Raikkonen fifth for Lotus, Grosjean sixth. Raikkonen set the fastest lap on lap 50 at 1:34.661.
Championship: Alonso 129, Webber 116, Vettel 100
Alonsos lead was 13 points; Webber closed in second, both Ferraris and both Red Bulls on the podium of every recent race. Germany at Hockenheim in a fortnight would be next.
