Max Verstappen won the 2019 Brazilian F1 GP. He started from P1 and won for the 1st time in Sao Paulo and making it his maiden win from pole. It was his 8th win and the 62nd victory for Red Bull Racing.

The start of the 2019 Brazilian Formula 1 Grand Prix was clean. The cars on the racing line had much more grip and Lewis Hamilton who started 3rd in the Mercedes could attack Sebastian Vettel in turn 1 for P2. Vettel defended with his Ferrari but Hamilton had more downforce on the outside and had no trouble on passing the German driver.

Max Verstappen who started from pole for the 2nd time in his career had a good getaway and drove away in the Red Bull Racing RB15. He maintained the gap to 2 seconds and pitted in lap 22.

In lap 8 we saw Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo colliding into the Haas of Kevin Magnussen. Ricciardo was trying to pass the Danish driver in turn 4, but locked up and couldn't avoid hitting Magnussen. The stewards gave him a 5 seconds time penalty for causing a collision.

In lap 21 Hamilton pitted to try and undercut Verstappen. He switched to Soft tyres, which implicated he would do a 2 stop race. The Mercedes plan worked. One lap later the Verstappen also pitted for new Softs and almost collided with the Williams of Kubica at the end of the pit lane. Verstappen came on track behind Hamilton on P2. The Dutchman was going for it and passed Hamilton in turn 1 at the end of the mainstraight. Kubica also received a 5s time penalty for the unsafe release by his team.

In lap 26 Hamilton told his team on the radio that he had an engine problem. His team told him that his engine was overheating and he had to change his engine mapping to cool it down.

Hamilton did his pitstop for the medium tyres in lap 44 to again try to undercut the race leader Verstappen. Mercedes pitted Hamilton's car in 3.3s, while Red Bull did there service to Verstappen in only 1.9s!

Valtteri Bottas also had a tough fight with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. The Finnish driver tried to overtake Leclerc for P5 but didn't succeed. Because Bottas drove a long time close behind the Ferrari his engine overheated and had an engine failure in lap 52 that ended his race. The incident caused a safety car period in which Verstappen pitted for Soft tyres and gave Hamilton the lead of the race. Hamilton asked his team what Verstappen had done and concluded he was a sitting duck for loosing the lead again. All lapped cars were also allowed to pass the safety car and Verstappen was right on his tail when the safety car period ended.

The safety car period ended at the end of lap 59. At the restart both Red Bull drivers Verstappen and Alexander Albon  gained 1 place. Verstappen was back in the lead while Albon took P3 by passing Vettel. Both overtakings happened at the same time in turn 1.

In lap 66 the Ferrari drivers had a dramatic moment when in their battle for position, they collided on the back straight. Leclerc got a front puncture and broke his suspension. Vettel got a rear puncture and damaged his floor and his rear suspension which was the end of the race for Ferrari. Again a safety car was deployed to clean the track of debris and both Ferraris.

This second safety car period ended at the end of lap 69. Hamilton had pitted and was driving around on P4 on fresh tyres. In the restart Hamilton passed Pierre Gasly for P3 in turn 1. His plan was to also pass Albon for P2. He tried to pass the Thai driver in turn 10 of the penultimate lap but hit his rear right that caused the Red Bull driver to spin and loose a lot of places. The incident was investigated after the race by the stewards and resulted in a 5s time penalty for Hamilton.

The incident also gave Pierre Gasly the opportunity to get his first podium by finishing second for the first time in Formula 1 making it a 1-2 podium for Honda in a long time!
