Max Verstappen scored his 7th F1 victory and the 61st win for Red Bull Racing today. It was the 2nd race win of the season for Verstappen.

Because the track was wet. All cars started the formation lap behind the safety car, except the decision to start from the grid took 4 laps. The race started clean, but both Red Bull's had a very bad start on the right row of the grid had a disadvantage because the track on the left side was much dryer.

In lap 3 the safety car was deployed after Sergio Pérez crashed his Racing Point coming out of turn 11. He pushed the throttle to much with cold tyres and spun of the track into the wall. The track had dried out a bit and a lot of drivers took the gamble to switch from full wets to the quicker intermediate tyres. Roman Grosjean and Charles Leclerc had a small collision in the pit lane.

Great battles were evolving on the wet track and Nico Hulkenberg was even fighting for P4 with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. After 10 laps Vettel already was on P7 and Hamilton got a radio message that the rain will intensify soon and will be coming from turn 1.

Moments before the formation lap of the German GP 2019.

The Renault power unit of Ricciardo's car blew up in lap 14 and caused a short virtual safety car period. The only one who pitted for new intermediate tyres was Ferrari driver Leclerc. Carlos Sainz had a narrow escape when he spun of the track in turn 16 and almost hit the barrier, but was able to go on. He lost 25 seconds with his spin but was lucky to go on.

In lap 22 Verstappen got real close to DRS Bottas, but all drivers on intermediate tyres had warn out tyres and were waiting for rain to cool them down. Kevin Magnussen was the first to switch to slicks on lap 23. A lap later Sebastian Vettel also switched to Soft slick tyres. The 3rd driver who switched over to slicks was Verstappen. The Red Bull driver had to work hard to keep his Honda power car on the circuit and even spun on the Medium harder compound.

Lando Norris retired his McLaren with a gearbox problem and again caused a virtual safety car session in which Lelcerc and Hamilton did their his pitstop for slicks. It started to rain more and the last section of track was getting much wetter and became the Waterloo for Leclerc who could not make turn 16 and got trapped in the gravel pit. This crash caused a safety car session and at that moment Lewis Hamilton also crashed into the wall that Leclerc did. His front wing broke and Hamilton crossed over the track to the pit entry on the wrong side of the bollard to get a new front wing and intermediate tyres.

During the safety car period Max Verstappen switched back to new intermediate tyres driving on P2. One lap later race leader Valtteri Bottas did the same one lap later and came back on P3. Nico Hulkenberg who never has won a race and a podium in F1 was driving on P2 right after the safety car disappeared. In lap 39 his podium aspirations got a set back  when he was passed by Mercedes drivers Bottas and Hamilton.

In lap 41 Hulkenberg's dream really went up in smoke when he also went off the track in turn 16 and again the safety car was deployed. Race leader Verstappen went in the pit to get new intermediates and didn't lost the lead. Vettel did the same and returned to the track on P10. The safety car period ended in lap 45. Lewis Hamilton had very bad timed pit stop and drove on P12 he got out of the pits.

In lap 54 Hamilton did a 360 coming out of turn 1 and had to get into the pit to get new tyres and returned to the track as dead last. A few laps later his team mate Bottas also lost control of his Mercedes in turn 1 and crashed into the barrier to deploy the safety car again for 2 laps. With 60 laps to go the last SC period ended and Vettel took P4 of Sainz at the end of the DRS straight. In lap 62 he even got P3 of Lance Stroll who was still driving on P3 and one lap later he even got P2 of Daniil Kvyat when Gasly ran into Albon's Toro Rosso and had to retired.
