Max Verstappen Triumphs in Thrilling Austrian Sprint
Max Verstappen claimed his fifth consecutive F1 Sprint victory after an entertaining battle with McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the Red Bull Ring.
The Red Bull driver started from pole position but briefly lost the lead to Norris before immediately fighting back. Piastri took advantage of the battle to move ahead of his teammate and finished second, with Norris completing the top three.
Verstappen Starts from Pole
Verstappen secured pole position for the Sprint ahead of Norris and Piastri, with George Russell fourth for Mercedes and Carlos Sainz fifth for Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton started sixth, followed by Sergio Perez and the two Alpine drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly. Charles Leclerc qualified 10th after failing to set a time in SQ3.
Alex Albon was moved from 19th on the grid to the pit lane after Williams made changes to his car under parc fermé conditions.
Aborted Start Reduces Sprint to 23 Laps
The initial start procedure was aborted, forcing the drivers to complete another formation lap and reducing the Sprint from 24 to 23 racing laps.
All 20 drivers started on the medium tyre.
When the race finally began, Verstappen retained the lead into Turn 1 while Norris had to defend second place from Piastri. Behind them, Sainz passed Russell around the outside of Turn 4 to move into fourth.
Norris Takes the Lead
Norris remained within striking distance of Verstappen during the opening laps and launched an attack on Lap 5. The McLaren driver dived down the inside at Turn 3 and successfully took the lead.
His advantage lasted only a matter of seconds. Verstappen stayed close and immediately attacked into Turn 4, reclaiming first place.
The battle compromised Norris' exit and allowed Piastri to capitalise, sweeping past his teammate to take second position.
Verstappen Breaks the DRS
Piastri remained inside Verstappen's DRS range during the early stages, keeping the pressure on the Red Bull driver.
Verstappen gradually edged clear and, once he managed to open the gap beyond one second, began to control the Sprint from the front.
Norris remained close to Piastri and increased the pressure on his teammate later in the race, but could not find a way back into second place.
With the two McLarens battling each other, Verstappen was able to extend his advantage and crossed the line 4.616 seconds ahead of Piastri.
McLaren Scores Double Sprint Podium
Piastri resisted Norris' late pressure to finish second, with just 0.732 seconds separating the two McLaren drivers at the chequered flag.
The result gave McLaren a strong double podium and confirmed that the team had the pace to challenge Red Bull at the front of the field.
Russell recovered from losing a place to Sainz at the start and later repassed the Ferrari to finish fourth.
Sainz took fifth ahead of Hamilton, while Leclerc recovered from 10th on the grid to finish seventh. Perez collected the final Sprint point in eighth.
Hülkenberg Penalised After Alonso Incident
Further down the field, Nico Hülkenberg and Fernando Alonso became involved in an incident at Turn 3 on Lap 21.
Hülkenberg attempted to pass the Aston Martin but locked up, missed the apex and forced Alonso off the track. The stewards ruled that the Haas driver was responsible and handed him a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points.
Hülkenberg had crossed the line in 14th position but the penalty dropped him to 19th in the final classification. Alonso finished 15th.
Tenth Sprint Victory for Verstappen
Verstappen's victory was his fifth consecutive Sprint win and the 10th Sprint victory of his Formula 1 career.
He collected the maximum eight championship points, with Piastri earning seven and Norris six. Russell, Sainz, Hamilton, Leclerc and Perez completed the points scorers.
Attention then turned to qualifying for Sunday's Austrian grand prix, with Verstappen and the increasingly competitive McLarens again expected to fight at the front.

A relatively straightforward sprint after Piastri’s pass for P2.
It surprised me Max could hold off both McLarens. If they start to join forces they should have passed him quite easily if you ask me... slipstreaming like cyclist do?
