A Season of Turbulence and Reckoning

The Alpine A524 will be remembered less for its on-track results and more for the dramatic off-track developments that defined the 2024 campaign and reshaped the team's entire direction. Alpine entered the year with the A524 as a significant redesign from its predecessor, targeting a return to the midfield competitiveness they had demonstrated in 2022. Instead, early races revealed that the car was struggling relative to expectations, and the team found themselves fighting at the back of the points-scoring zone rather than in the positions their resources suggested was achievable. The gap to the leading midfield teams proved stubbornly resistant to the updates that arrived over the course of the season.

Briatore Returns to Reshape Alpine

The defining narrative of the A524 season was the return of Flavio Briatore as Executive Advisor to Alpine and Renault. The former Benetton and Renault team principal, whose double championship successes with Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso defined two eras of Formula 1, was brought in to diagnose the team's recurring struggles and chart a new course. Briatore's arrival prompted significant leadership changes, with Bruno Famin eventually departing from the team principal role. The structural reset that followed, including changes to personnel, processes, and the team's overall philosophy, was designed to address root causes of underperformance that had accumulated over several years rather than simply reacting to individual poor results.

Gasly and Ocon's Final Season Together

Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon contested their second and final season as Alpine teammates in 2024. Both drivers extracted creditable performances from a car that often made points-scoring difficult, and both contributed to the development understanding that would shape the A525 programme. Ocon's departure at the end of the season, moving to Haas, brought an end to a French driver partnership that had been part of Alpine's identity since the team's rebranding. Gasly remained as the anchor driver, committed to the recovery project that Briatore's arrival had set in motion, while rookie Jack Doohan was confirmed as Ocon's replacement for 2025.
