The 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix qualifying session delivered everything we love about Formula 1 at altitude, thin air, thick tension, and a slipstream drag race that turned into a psychological chess match between the title contenders. As the high-pitched engines echoed through the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, three different teams took turns on top before Lando Norris stamped his authority with one of the laps of the season, grabbing a brilliant pole for McLaren.
Just behind him, Charles Leclerc reminded everyone that Ferrari’s one-lap pace never truly disappears, while Lewis Hamilton used all his experience to secure a perfectly placed third, right in the slipstream zone for the long sprint to Turn 1. George Russell backed him up in fourth to give Mercedes tactical options on the front two rows, as Max Verstappen could do no better than fifth after a difficult balance left him fighting the car through the technical middle sector.
Championship leader Oscar Piastri had a tense evening, barely escaping Q2 before salvaging eighth (which becomes seventh thanks to Carlos Sainz’s grid penalty). The Australian’s recent cushion at the top now looks under threat, with Norris smelling blood and Verstappen lurking for damage control on race day.
The atmosphere in Mexico City was electric, 350,000 passionate fans packed into the grandstands, mariachi horns echoing off the grandstands, and the scent of championship drama in the thin mountain air. With the top seven cars separated by just over half a second, and a kilometre-long drag to the first corner waiting to shuffle the order, tomorrow’s race promises fireworks before the first braking zone.
