Max Verstappen claimed victory in a chaotic 19-lap United States Grand Prix Sprint at the Circuit of The Americas, surviving an early challenge from George Russell and two Safety Car periods to finish ahead of the Mercedes driver and Carlos Sainz.
The biggest drama came within seconds of the start when championship leaders Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris were both eliminated in a Turn 1 collision. Fernando Alonso was also caught up in the incident, while the Sprint eventually finished behind the Safety Car following a late collision between Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon.
Verstappen Takes Sprint Pole
Norris had set the pace during SQ1 and SQ2, but Verstappen delivered when it mattered in SQ3 to claim his 10th Sprint pole position.
The Red Bull driver lined up first ahead of Norris and Piastri, with Nico Hülkenberg producing an excellent qualifying performance to put his Kick Sauber fourth. Russell started fifth ahead of Alonso, Sainz, Lewis Hamilton, Alex Albon and Charles Leclerc.
All 20 drivers started the Sprint on the medium tyre.
McLaren's Sprint Ends at Turn 1
Verstappen made a clean start from pole, but chaos erupted immediately behind him as the field funnelled into Turn 1.
Piastri was tagged by Hülkenberg's Kick Sauber, sending the Australian spinning into McLaren teammate Norris. Norris was eliminated immediately, while Piastri initially continued before stopping with damage before completing the opening lap.
Alonso was also caught up in the incident and retired, while Hülkenberg suffered damage and dropped to the back after making a pit stop.
The amount of debris on the circuit triggered the first Safety Car period.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown was furious after losing both championship contenders, describing the incident as “amateur hour” and stating that neither of his drivers was to blame.
Russell Attacks Verstappen
Racing resumed at the end of Lap 5 with Verstappen leading Russell and Sainz.
Russell remained close to the Red Bull and launched an ambitious attack into Turn 12 on Lap 8. The Mercedes driver went down the inside, but both cars ran wide and Verstappen retained the lead.
The stewards noted the incident but decided that no further investigation was necessary.
Russell subsequently dropped outside DRS range as Verstappen began to increase his advantage before the second Safety Car neutralised the race.
Ferrari Battle Behind Sainz
Sainz held a strong third place for Williams while Hamilton and Leclerc fought over fourth behind him.
Hamilton eventually emerged ahead of his Ferrari teammate, with Albon running sixth for Williams and Yuki Tsunoda producing one of the strongest recoveries of the Sprint.
Tsunoda had started only 18th but climbed into the points during a frantic opening lap and eventually secured seventh place for Red Bull.
Oliver Bearman initially occupied eighth for Haas, with Kimi Antonelli close behind in the Mercedes.
Bearman Penalty Promotes Antonelli
Bearman and Antonelli became involved in a close battle for the final points-paying position. Bearman left the circuit while defending and retained his advantage over the Mercedes driver.
The stewards ruled that Bearman had left the track and gained a lasting advantage, handing him a 10-second time penalty.
Although Bearman crossed the line eighth, the penalty dropped him to 15th in the final classification and promoted Antonelli into eighth place and the final Sprint point.
Stroll and Ocon Trigger Second Safety Car
Further drama arrived on Lap 16 when Stroll attempted an overtake on Ocon into Turn 1.
The Aston Martin driver misjudged his braking point, locked up and collided with the Haas, eliminating both cars from the Sprint.
The incident triggered the second Safety Car period. With insufficient time to clear the cars and debris before the end of the race, the Sprint finished under caution.
After the Sprint, the stewards found Stroll wholly responsible for the collision and handed him a five-place grid penalty for the Grand Prix, along with two penalty points on his licence.
Verstappen Takes 13th Sprint Victory

Verstappen crossed the line behind the Safety Car to secure his 13th career Sprint victory and his third consecutive Sprint win at the Circuit of The Americas.
Russell finished second for Mercedes, with Sainz taking an impressive third place for Williams. Hamilton and Leclerc brought the Ferraris home fourth and fifth, followed by Albon, Tsunoda and Antonelli.
The eight points for victory reduced Verstappen's deficit to championship leader Piastri to 55 points, while Norris remained 22 points behind his McLaren teammate.
Verstappen nevertheless acknowledged that Red Bull still had work to do before the Grand Prix, particularly with its race pace, after Russell had been able to put him under pressure following the first Safety Car restart.
McLaren Faces Rapid Repair Job
For McLaren, the Sprint could hardly have gone worse. Norris and Piastri had started second and third with an opportunity to score heavily, but both cars were eliminated before completing a lap.
The team therefore left the Sprint without a point and faced a significant repair job ahead of qualifying later on Saturday.
With Verstappen taking maximum points, the opening-lap collision also tightened the Drivers' Championship battle ahead of the remaining races of the season.

What a move by Piastri.
Le carambolage au us n'est pas la faute de Lance mais celle de Piastri. Les commissaires ont pas de couille de peur de lui faire perdre le championnat .
