Under the floodlights of the Lusail International Circuit, the 2025 Championship fight tightened like a drumskin. Oscar Piastri delivered a flawless qualifying performance to secure his second pole of the weekend, keeping his title hopes firmly alive and setting the stage for a dramatic showdown in Qatar. His McLaren team mate and Championship leader Lando Norris lines up alongside him on the front row after a small but costly mistake denied him a final lap in Q3.
Behind the papaya armada, Max Verstappen starts from third with everything to play for. The Dutchman knows he must finish ahead of Norris to avoid falling out of the title race before Abu Dhabi. George Russell joins him on the second row, once again proving Mercedes’ pace over a single lap even as the team continues to chase race-day consistency.
Further back, Sainz and Alonso lurk with experience, while the young guns Kimi Antonelli and Isack Hadjar continue to impress after breaking into the top 10 shootout. Ferrari endured another bruising Saturday, with Leclerc just clinging onto Q3 and Lewis Hamilton suffering a painful Q1 exit, leaving the Scuderia with plenty of overnight homework.
With mandatory two-stop strategies, fierce tyre degradation, and three Championship contenders starting inside the top three, Qatar’s second running of the Grand Prix promises tension from the very first metre. One driver can seal the title, another must win to survive, and a third is hanging on by his fingernails.
