Lewis HAMILTON won his 18th F1 World Championship race at the 2012 Canada F1 GP, becoming the 7th different winner in 7 races and reasserting McLarens Montreal form. The McLaren driver started second and won at Montreal by 2.513 seconds from Romain Grosjean for Lotus. It was McLarens 173rd F1 win.

Vettel pole, McLaren strategy loaded

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on 10 June 2012 saw Vettel take pole with a 1:13.784 lap, Hamilton second by 0.303, Alonso third for Ferrari, Webber fourth. The freshly-laid surface and the Pirelli soft compound made two-stopping the fastest strategy, but only just.

Race day: Hamilton one-stops around Vettel and Alonso

Vettel led early, Alonso taking the lead after the first stop on a supposed one-stop plan. But it was Hamilton on the two-stop who came out ahead on fresh rubber in the closing stint and took a controlled win. Grosjean second for Lotus, a fine drive after Perez had also passed Vettel late on tyre wear. Perez third for Sauber, Vettel fourth, Alonso fifth as his one-stop faltered, Rosberg sixth for Mercedes GP, Webber seventh, Raikkonen eighth. Vettel set the fastest lap on lap 70 at 1:15.752. Seven different winners in seven races extended F1s longest unique-winners streak.

Championship: Hamilton 88, Alonso 86, Vettel 85

Three drivers within three points at the top. Europe at Valencia in a fortnight would be next.
