Kimi Antonelli claimed his seventh Formula 1 victory at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, charging from 19th on the grid to win at Monza for the first time. It was also the Italian's seventh victory of the season. Mercedes secured its 140th Formula 1 Grand Prix win, its ninth victory of 2026 and its eighth triumph in the Italian Grand Prix.

Antonelli Wins Italian GP From 19th at Monza

Kimi Antonelli delivered one of the drives of the 2026 Formula 1 season to win his home Italian Grand Prix from 19th on the grid, hunting down Mercedes team-mate George Russell in a dramatic closing stint at Monza. What began as a damage-limitation exercise after a power unit penalty instead became a landmark victory, with Antonelli becoming the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix since 1966.

Russell finished second after leading for much of the race, while Max Verstappen recovered from Red Bull's difficult start to the weekend to complete the podium. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris brought both McLarens home inside the top five, with Lewis Hamilton salvaging sixth for Ferrari after Charles Leclerc crashed out early. Crucially for the championship, Antonelli arrived at Monza 59 points clear of Russell and left with that advantage increased to 66.

Leclerc crash turns the race upside down

Pierre Gasly made a clean getaway from his surprise pole position at the original start, but the opening laps quickly became chaotic. The two Ferraris went side by side through the first chicane, with Hamilton taking the inside for the opening part and Leclerc holding the inside through the second. They appeared to touch before Hamilton was forced onto the gravel, dropping him deep into the pack. The stewards reviewed the incident and decided no further investigation was necessary.

Leclerc's afternoon then ended almost immediately. After losing a position to Verstappen, the Ferrari driver lost the rear exiting Parabolica and crashed heavily into the barriers. He climbed out unaided, but the impact damaged the barrier sufficiently for the race to be red-flagged. For Ferrari and the tifosi, the home Grand Prix had already suffered a devastating blow.

The stoppage completely changed the strategic picture. Drivers were allowed to change tyres during the red flag, and Antonelli switched from the hard compound he had started on to mediums. The restart was then delayed by an aborted start after Yuki Tsunoda lined up incorrectly, creating an extra formation lap and shaving another racing lap off the remaining distance.

Antonelli tears through the field

Antonelli had started the afternoon 19th because of his power unit penalties, but the red flag gave him an opportunity to attack on a more competitive tyre. He wasted no time using it. By Lap 7 he had already climbed to sixth, and by Lap 13 he was third after passing Piastri.

His progress continued at a remarkable rate. Antonelli passed Verstappen for second on Lap 16 and, just two laps later, swept past Russell to take the lead of his home Grand Prix. From 19th to first in 18 racing laps was already extraordinary, but the most difficult part of the afternoon was still to come.

Russell fought back immediately. The Mercedes drivers went wheel-to-wheel through the opening two chicanes on successive laps, swapping positions and refusing to give each other an inch. Russell eventually made the pass stick on Lap 23, prompting Mercedes to ask both drivers to stop fighting, build a gap over Verstappen and resume their battle later. Antonelli reluctantly settled behind his team-mate.

VSC gives Mercedes a strategic dilemma

The decisive strategic moment arrived on Lap 29 when Lance Stroll stopped on circuit and triggered a Virtual Safety Car. Mercedes called Antonelli in for fresh medium tyres, while Verstappen also stopped. Russell stayed out on his ageing hard compound, retaining track position but committing himself to an exceptionally long final stint.

Antonelli rejoined sixth and suddenly had several cars to clear before he could even think about his team-mate. He dispatched Gasly almost immediately, then passed Norris before closing on Hamilton. The Ferrari driver's mistake at the chicane opened the door, and Piastri was the final obstacle before Antonelli returned to second on Lap 37.

Russell was 8.9 seconds ahead at that point, but the two Mercedes cars were now in completely different races. Russell had the lead and old hard tyres; Antonelli had fresh mediums and far more pace. The chase was on.

Russell's lead begins to disappear

Antonelli initially took chunks out of Russell's advantage. Eight seconds became seven, then five. Russell responded with personal-best laps of his own, but his hard tyres were approaching the end of a mammoth stint and Mercedes could see the rubber beginning to deteriorate.

By Lap 45, Antonelli had reduced the gap to 3.9 seconds. One lap later it was 2.8, then 1.7. By Lap 48 the Italian was within a second and had Overtake Mode available, while Russell was trying to defend on hard tyres more than 40 laps old.

The pass appeared inevitable, but Antonelli almost threw away the victory before he could make it.

Gravel scare nearly ends Antonelli's charge

On Lap 49, Antonelli closed rapidly onto the back of Russell and appeared ready to launch an attack. Instead, he hesitated as Russell committed to his line and ran wide into the gravel. For a few seconds, the home victory looked to have disappeared.

Antonelli kept enough momentum to escape and rejoined in second, albeit with his tyres covered in dust. He later admitted he feared the mistake had cost him his chance, but the Mercedes still had the pace. Within a lap the tyres were clean and he was back within striking distance.

This time there was no hesitation. Antonelli attacked Russell into Ascari on Lap 50 and took the lead. With three laps remaining, the most improbable victory of his season was suddenly in his hands.

Verstappen fights back to the podium

Behind the Mercedes battle, Verstappen had endured a race of his own. The Red Bull driver briefly took the lead from Russell on Lap 12 using Overtake Mode into the first chicane, but Red Bull could not sustain the pace needed to keep both Mercedes cars behind.

Russell repassed Verstappen three laps later, with Antonelli following soon afterwards. Verstappen later complained about a rear-axle issue and lost further ground after stopping under the Virtual Safety Car. He still had enough pace to recover, passing Gasly, Norris and Hamilton as he worked his way back towards the front.

A lock-up at the first chicane temporarily allowed Piastri ahead, but Verstappen recovered and repassed the McLaren on Lap 43 to secure third place. Considering how uncomfortable the RB22 had looked on Friday, a podium represented a strong recovery for Red Bull.

McLaren settles for fourth and fifth

McLaren never quite possessed the pace to challenge Mercedes for victory, but both cars remained involved in the leading battles. Piastri spent much of the race around the top four and fought closely with Hamilton and Verstappen, while Norris had a more difficult opening phase after struggling to bring his hard tyres into their operating window.

The two McLaren drivers eventually found themselves fighting each other over fourth place in the closing stages. Norris attacked but ran onto the grass and wisely backed out rather than turning the intra-team fight into something more expensive. Piastri therefore finished fourth with Norris fifth, securing a solid haul on a weekend where the papaya cars never looked like the outright benchmark.

Hamilton salvages sixth for Ferrari

Hamilton's race had been compromised almost immediately by the opening-lap battle with Leclerc, which dropped him to 11th. His recovery was impressive, though, and by Lap 10 he had climbed back into the podium positions after passing Gasly.

The Ferrari driver also fought closely with Piastri and briefly moved ahead of the McLaren, but Ferrari's pace faded later in the race. Antonelli came through during his charge, followed by Verstappen, leaving Hamilton to finish sixth.

It was nowhere near the result Ferrari wanted at its home Grand Prix, but with Leclerc already out of the race, Hamilton at least ensured the Scuderia did not leave Monza empty-handed.

Gasly cannot convert pole into victory

Gasly had begun from the first pole position of his Formula 1 career and initially made the most of it, leading away cleanly before Russell passed him into Turn 1 on Lap 2. The Alpine driver fought back strongly against Leclerc and remained in the leading group through the opening phase.

Qualifying pace and race pace proved very different propositions, however. Verstappen passed Gasly on Lap 8, Hamilton followed two laps later and Piastri and Antonelli soon joined them. Alpine's remarkable Saturday performance had been genuine, but the car did not have the race pace to fight Mercedes, Red Bull and McLaren over 53 laps.

Russell's championship opportunity disappears

Russell could hardly have entered Sunday with a better opportunity to reduce Antonelli's championship lead. He started second while his team-mate lined up 19th, with 59 points separating them before the race.

Instead, Antonelli won and Russell finished second. The gap increased to 66 points.

Russell admitted afterwards that he had expected both Mercedes cars to stay out under the Virtual Safety Car and was surprised when Antonelli was called into the pits. Mercedes will undoubtedly analyse that strategic split, but Antonelli still had to make the alternative strategy work. He had to pass the traffic, close almost nine seconds on Russell and then make the decisive move on track.

He did all three.

Antonelli delivers an Italian victory for the ages

Antonelli began his home Grand Prix expecting to protect his championship lead. A podium had been regarded as ambitious from 19th on the grid, never mind victory.

Instead, he carved through the field, raced Verstappen and Russell, accepted Mercedes' team instructions, capitalised on the Virtual Safety Car, chased down an eight-second deficit and even survived a trip through the gravel when the race appeared ready to slip from his grasp.

He did all of it in front of the Italian crowd.

Antonelli arrived at Monza with a 59-point championship lead and departed with 66 points in hand, his seventh victory of the season and a place in Italian motorsport history. He became the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix since 1966, and he did it after starting 19th.

Some victories simply add another number to a driver's statistics.

This was Kimi Antonelli's Monza moment.

A champion’s drive by Antonelli, even if the red flagging & VSC helped him.
I certainly didn’t think he could win from such a lowly starting position.
The booing Russell received was totally undeserved, though.

The Mercedes battle was also great & reminiscent of Hamilton-Rosberg in the mid-2010s, & fortunately, Antonelli didn’t get stuck on the gravel.

Gasly fell back as I anticipated & Colapinto would’ve ultimately only finished a position higher without his unforced error, which unfortunately wasn’t shown in replay form.

Leclerc’s weird rear loss & barrier hit reminded me of his similar off at Alboreto-Parabolica in the 2020 race.
