Sebastian Vettel won his 15th F1 World Championship race at the 2011 Monaco F1 GP, a strategy masterclass held to the flag by a late red flag. The Red Bull driver started from pole and won on the streets of Monte Carlo by 1.138 seconds from Fernando Alonso for Ferrari. It was Red Bulls 19th F1 win.

Vettel pole, monster pace on old rubber

Monte Carlo on 29 May 2011 saw Vettel take pole with a 1:13.556 lap, Button second by 0.441 for McLaren, Webber third, Alonso fourth for Ferrari. Vettel's weekend was defined by his willingness to run long on used tyres, extending a stint to the point where the strategy nearly failed but did not.

Race day: Vettel on old options, late red flag saves him

Vettel stopped just once, running Pirelli option tyres for a huge middle stint while Alonso, Button and Hamilton went two-stop. By lap 65 Vettels tyres were finished and Alonso was closing at more than a second a lap; Button, on newer rubber, had made his final stop and was hunting fast. A red flag on lap 72 for a Petrov-Alguersuari collision at Ste Devote allowed teams to fit new tyres before the restart, saving Vettel's day. He held the win at the restart from Alonso and Button. Webber fourth, Kobayashi fifth for Sauber, Hamilton sixth after two collisions and a drive-through. Webber set the fastest lap on lap 78 at 1:16.234.

Championship: Vettel 143, Hamilton 85, Webber 79

Vettel's lead was up to 58 points, Alonso now 62 back on 69. Canada in a fortnight would be next.
