Jenson BUTTON won his 15th F1 World Championship race at the 2012 Brazil F1 GP, a rain-classic finale in which Sebastian VETTEL clinched his third consecutive F1 world championship despite a first-lap spin to last. The McLaren driver started second and won at Interlagos by 2.754 seconds from Fernando Alonso for Ferrari. It was McLarens 178th F1 win.
Hamilton pole for McLaren front-row lockout
Interlagos on 25 November 2012 saw Hamilton take pole with a 1:12.458 lap, Button second by 0.055 for a McLaren front-row lockout, Webber third for Red Bull, Vettel fourth. Alonso needed a miracle: he had to outscore Vettel by at least 4 points to take the title.
Race day: Vettel spins to last, recovers to sixth, seals title
The race began in changeable conditions and delivered chaos on lap 1: Vettel was clipped by Bruno Senna at Turn 4 and spun into the pit wall, his Red Bull damaged and running last. His championship looked to have vanished. But over 71 laps of rain, safety cars and a chaotic changeable-conditions race, Vettel drove one of the recovery drives of his career: from 22nd to 6th, taking 8 points that secured the title by 3 points over Alonso. Button controlled the front for McLaren after Hamilton was collected by Hulkenberg while battling for the lead. Alonso second for Ferrari, Massa third for the sister Ferrari (his final F1 podium), Webber fourth, Hulkenberg fifth after his mistake dropped him from the lead, Vettel sixth for the title-sealing points, Schumacher seventh in his very last F1 race. Hamilton set the fastest lap on lap 38 at 1:18.069.
Championship: Vettel 281 champion, Alonso 278, Raikkonen 207
Vettel became three-time world champion at 25 years and 145 days, the youngest triple champion in F1 history. Schumachers retirement (a second one) ended a career of seven titles and 91 wins. An extraordinary end to an extraordinary season, 2012s eight different winners in 20 rounds was F1s widest spread ever, but the two big names still shared the trophies as they always do.
