Kimi RAIKKONEN won his 12th F1 World Championship race at the 2007 British F1 GP, denying Lewis Hamilton a home victory in the rookies dream first Silverstone. The Ferrari driver started from 2nd on the grid and won at Silverstone by 2.459 seconds from Fernando Alonso. It was the 200th win for the Ferrari F1 team and Raikkonens 3rd win of the season, Ferrari back into the championship fight properly.

Hamilton pole for his home Grand Prix

Silverstone on 8 July 2007 opened with Lewis Hamilton taking pole with a 1:19.997 lap for his home Grand Prix, Raikkonen second for Ferrari, Alonso third. Massa fourth. The Silverstone grandstands were packed with British Hamilton fans expecting a home victory from the rookie championship leader.

Race day: Raikkonen picks the perfect strategy

Hamilton led the opening 15 laps, but Raikkonens Ferrari had superior race pace and better pit-stop strategy. Raikkonen took the lead on lap 38 through the pit-stop cycle and controlled the race to the flag, winning by 2.459 seconds from Alonso. Hamilton could only manage third at his home Grand Prix. Kubica fourth for BMW Sauber, Massa fifth for Ferrari, Heidfeld sixth. Raikkonen set the fastest lap on lap 17 with a 1:20.638.

Ferrari 200 wins, championship shrinks

Ferraris 200th F1 win came on their fifth attempt to reach the milestone in 2007. The scarlet cars were on the way back into the championship. Hamilton kept his lead but Raikkonen was closing.

Championship: Hamilton 70, Alonso 58, Raikkonen 52, Massa 51

Hamilton still led with 70 points but Raikkonen closed to 52 and Massa to 51, both Ferraris in the championship hunt. McLaren 128 constructors, Ferrari 103. Nurburgring in a week would test whether Ferraris upturn was permanent.
