2009 Europe F1 Grand Prix Race Report & Results

Event: European Grand Prix
Track: Valencia Street Circuit
Weather: dry, hot, sunny
Rubens BARRICHELLO won his 10th F1 World Championship race at the 2009 Europe F1 GP in Valencia, a first victory in more than five years. The Brawn GP driver started third and won on the Valencia street circuit by 2.358 seconds from Lewis Hamilton for McLaren. It was Brawn GPs 7th F1 win of the season.
Hamilton pole, McLarens KERS advantage
Valencia on 23 August 2009 saw Lewis Hamilton take pole with a 1:39.498 lap, Kovalainen second for a McLaren front-row lockout, Barrichello third for Brawn GP, Vettel fourth. The MP4-24s KERS package and revised aero package now matched anyone on outright pace.
Race day: Barrichello wins on strategy
Barrichello beat Hamilton off the line and, aided by a three-stop strategy that ran him lighter through the middle stint, controlled the race from there. His first victory since the 2004 Chinese Grand Prix ended a five-year drought. Hamilton second after McLarens slower stops, Raikkonen third for Ferrari, Kovalainen fourth. Rosberg fifth for Williams, Alonso sixth for Renault, Button only seventh as his form crisis deepened. Glock set the fastest lap on lap 55 at 1:38.683.
Championship: Button 72, Barrichello 64, Vettel 47
Buttons lead was down to just 8 points, and his own teammate was now the closest threat. Belgium in a week would be next.
