Race day: Alonso jumps Vettel, Vettel jumps back
Alonso got the perfect launch and led into Turn 1 to the delight of the Tifosi. Vettel spent the next dozen laps stalking, finally passing Alonso around the outside of Curva Grande with one of the moves of the year, using DRS and the Red Bulls high-downforce Monza package. From there Vettel drove away to win by nearly 10 seconds. Button second for McLaren, Alonso held on for third, Hamilton fourth after his own passes. Schumacher fifth for Mercedes GP, Massa sixth for Ferrari. Hamilton set the fastest lap on lap 52 at 1:26.187.

Vettels lead was 112 points with six rounds left; the title was now a mathematical formality. Singapore in a fortnight would be next.
