Mar.25 - Toto Wolff has defended Formula 1's controversial 2026 regulations amid renewed criticism from Dr Helmut Marko, as the debate over the new era continues to intensify.

When asked about the growing backlash, the Mercedes boss insisted the picture is not as one-sided as some suggest.

"Not everyone's complaining, but some drivers are having problems with the complex electronic management," Wolff told Osterreich.

"The main target group, however, is the fans, and over 90 percent of them think we now have entertaining racing - entertaining and exciting."

Wolff also rejected the idea that Formula 1 should have stuck with its previous formula.

"In sports, you always have to evolve," he said.

"You should respect both sides - the opinions of the traditionalists who want the sport to stay the way it used to be, and those of the new fans who say 'We actually like it the way it is now, and that's how it should stay.'

"We have to evaluate what's best for F1 and its fans. At the moment, we see a clear direction."

With Mercedes currently leading the field, Wolff also dismissed concerns that the championship could become predictable.

"The first two races paint a completely different picture," he said.

"I'm not worried that it could get boring. We have good pace, but so does Ferrari. McLaren will catch up, and the others will quickly learn about engine management.

"We're seeing extremely exciting and spectacular racing not only at the front between us and Ferrari, but also in the midfield with the most overtaking manoeuvres."

However, he did acknowledge one area that could be improved.

"What we might still be able to refine is the qualifying format, where we should reduce the energy management a bit. That's something we're working on."

Wolff also played down criticism from Marko directly.

"The doctor is a traditionalist. One has to respect his opinion," he said.

Marko, however, has not softened his stance. "No," the retired Red Bull advisor replied when asked if he had warmed to the new Formula 1.

"It lives and dies by the Ferrari show at the start. If you take that away, there's not much going on.

"Most of the overtaking manoeuvres are just passing. But it's still early in the season, maybe it'll change."

Even so, Marko acknowledged Mercedes' current strength.

"Mercedes is in a class of its own. And they're not even showing everything," he said.

Marko acknowledged Antonelli's Shanghai breakthrough but said George Russell remains the more likely title contender for now.

"Everything points to Russell - he has the experience," he said.

As for Red Bull, Marko insisted the situation is not yet lost despite a difficult start.

"Red Bull is known for being able to catch up quickly and effectively. So, anything is still possible," he said.

"The good thing is that the two April races have been cancelled, which gives them even more time."

Remember when Merc had porpoising problems and bottoming out, Wolff wanted everybody to change their cars.
If Merc wasn't winning Wolff would be one of the loudest complaining.
He goes on about the what he calls the amount of overtaking, it is not overtaking it is passing.
You don't lose the DNA of a sport to "evolve " as Wolff puts it.
I have been an F1 fan for 41 years but no more , if you want to watch Mario Kart passing and not the bravest and skilful driver then by all means be a fan , but not me.
I'll find a different motorsport category to watch.

    Sport has to "evolve".
They still play soccer/ football the same way . One team plays keeping off the other team and tries to score by getting it in the back of the net.
Athletics is still the same , line up and run as fast as you can for shorter races and faster than the orhers for longer in the longer races.
Swimming they tried to "evolve " by making swimsuits which they eventually banned.
    "Evolve " my *ss.

You’re either evolving or dying watching life and the world pass you by. Adapting to the world we live in today is a must, because the world doesn’t adapt to us.

F1 hasn’t been the same for the past 41 years, if it’s even true you’ve been a fan that long. Certainly, you complained about the massive change in 2014 for the turbo hybrid era. You say your not a fan anymore, yet hear you are on an F1 message board. Complaining or not, you’re here, being the hypocrite you usually are about all things F1.

Torger is so so desperate for his team to win a championship again, hes resorted to talking rubbish that he think fans will believe

Says you've got to respect people's points of view while rubbishing those who disagree with him as traditionalists. Whether a tradition is good or bad depends on the tradition. A traditionalist is more correctly someone who will always follow a tradition, regardless of how it measures up to other ways. There's no indication that those who want better racing want anything but this. If the tradition is better racing, it's indefensible to want anything else. Considering the removal of the MGU-H and that they have to use less fuel, maintaining an 80/20 balance of power would still be a commendable target.

Some time ago I pointed out that F1 is not a sport it is an entertainment business and for the last few years has been boring, most entertainment being provided not by great driving but by bad driving and cheating.
F1 as a business has to evolve, if you want tradition watch Goodwood as I do it’s great
The Ferrari drivers and others put on a spectacular display of overtaking, passing call it what you like.
The most common reason for criticising a team or individual is because they are beating your own favourite team or driver.

And what should we call criticizing the regulations and organizing body

      Boring?
21 was one of the best seasons for exciting racing and entertainment ever
23 was a masterclass in perfection by a team and driver
and 25 how was that boring?

However the Fia can obviously see into the future, thats why they got rid of"fastest lap points! they should replace it with best battery management lap points perhaps

Still whichever/whatever a race this weekend set alarm for fp2
