Kevin Magnussen is on the verge of returning to F1 as Pastor Maldonado’s replacement at Renault.
The Dane last drove for McLaren in 2014 but was dropped in favour of Fernando Alonso and cast into the F1 doldrums.
However, widespread reports suggest that Maldonado’s sponsors, Venezuelan company PDVSA, have fallen out with Renault and the team have turned to Magnussen.
Maldonado is perhaps the best known pay driver on the grid and has been consistently mocked for it after a string of poor displays.
But he did win a race in 2012 while at Williams and has shown that he is worthy of his place in the sport.
Magnussen, 23, has long been groomed for the top of F1 and made a spectacular debut in the 2014 Australian Grand Prix, by claiming second .
However, he failed to show his full potential that season, making McLaren’s decision to drop him for two-time champion Alonso fairly easy.
But fans are expected to welcome his return to the grid, where he will join rookie Jolyon Palmer.
