Sebastian VETTEL won his 14th F1 World Championship race at the 2011 Spain F1 GP, holding off a determined Lewis Hamilton by six-tenths of a second. The Red Bull driver started second and won at Barcelona by 0.630 seconds from Hamilton for McLaren. It was Red Bulls 18th F1 win.
Webber pole, Vettel jumps him at the start
Barcelona on 22 May 2011 saw Mark Webber take pole for Red Bull with a 1:20.981 lap, Vettel second by 0.200, Hamilton third for McLaren, Alonso fourth for Ferrari. Alonso, home-town hero, brought fresh Ferrari updates but qualifying showed the F150 not up to Red Bull pace.
Race day: Vettel wins as Hamilton closes to the flag
Vettel jumped Webber at the start and Alonso briefly ran second before dropping back. Hamilton, on the four-stop strategy, hunted Vettel through the closing stint on fresher tyres and closed to within DRS range on the final lap; Vettel held him off by 0.630 seconds. Button third for McLaren, Webber fourth, Alonso fifth to the disappointment of the home crowd, Schumacher sixth for Mercedes GP, Rosberg seventh, Heidfeld eighth. Hamilton set the fastest lap on lap 52 at 1:26.727.
Championship: Vettel 118, Hamilton 77, Webber 67
Vettels lead had swelled to 41 points; four wins from five rounds. Monaco in a week would be next.
