Audi Strengthens Trackside Team With McNish Appointment

Audi Strengthens F1 Team With Allan McNish Appointment
Audi Revolut F1 Team has strengthened its growing Formula 1 organisation by appointing Allan McNish as Racing Director.
The Scot, already deeply involved in Audi’s Formula 1 programme, will take on trackside responsibility from the Miami grand prix onwards. His new role will cover sporting matters, engineering coordination, driver management, race strategy, garage operations, and trackside media and partner activity.
It is not a ceremonial appointment. McNish is being placed at the centre of Audi’s race weekend operation as the manufacturer continues to build the foundations of its Formula 1 project.
McNish Takes Trackside Control At Audi
McNish has long been part of Audi’s motorsport structure and has been involved in the F1 project since its early stages. That makes him a logical appointment at a point where Audi is moving from preparation into full operational development.
His task will be to bring greater coordination to the team’s trackside work. That includes linking the sporting, engineering, strategy and driver management departments during race weekends, areas that can quickly decide whether a young Formula 1 project moves forward or remains stuck in transition.
McNish will report directly to Mattia Binotto, who serves as CEO and Team Principal of Audi Revolut F1 Team.
A Proven Audi Motorsport Figure
McNish arrives in the role with a serious motorsport CV. He raced in Formula 1, worked as a test and reserve driver, and became best known for his success in endurance racing, including multiple Le Mans 24 Hours victories and an FIA World Endurance Championship title.
Inside Audi, he has also held senior roles including Director of Coordination for Audi Group Motorsport and Team Principal of Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler in Formula E.
More recently, McNish has been leading Audi’s Driver Development Programme. He will continue in that position alongside his new Racing Director responsibilities.
Binotto said McNish brings “an exceptional combination of racing experience, technical understanding and leadership” to the position. He added that McNish’s ability to connect performance-related departments will be important as Audi continues to develop its Formula 1 operation.
McNish described the role as a privilege, saying Audi is a marque that means a great deal to him. He said his focus will be on ensuring that all areas of race operations continue to improve and perform at the highest possible level.
Audi Builds Towards Its 2030 F1 Target
For Audi, the appointment is another sign that its Formula 1 project is becoming more serious and more structured.
The German manufacturer has entered Formula 1 with its own hybrid power unit programme, a chassis base in Hinwil, and additional technical operations in the United Kingdom. That gives Audi a broad technical platform, but also a complex structure that needs strong coordination on race weekends.
McNish’s appointment is therefore about more than adding another respected name to the management chart. Audi is putting an experienced operator into a role that touches almost every key part of its trackside performance.
The long-term target remains clear: Audi wants to become a genuine world championship contender by 2030. Bringing McNish into a central race-weekend role is another important step in that process.
