Lauda questions Verstappen 'intelligence'

Apr.16 - F1 legend Niki Lauda has questioned Max Verstappen's "intelligence" after the Chinese grand prix.

The Dutchman's headline faux pas in Shanghai was a clash with world championship leader Sebastian Vettel, for which he apologised privately.

"That was s**t," Verstappen told Bild newspaper. "It was my fault but I cannot undo it now."

The 20-year-old is often defiant in the wake of clashes, but this time around he was criticised not only by Vettel and Lauda, but also his own bosses Christian Horner and Dr Helmut Marko.

"He needs to control himself a bit more," Marko told Movistar.

"I have told him that his time is coming but that he cannot overdo it. He knows that he has lost a victory and we lost a 1-2."

German Vettel said he is at least happy with how Verstappen dealt with the aftermath of the crash.

"I thought it was good that he came to me rather than doing it through the media. He misjudged the situation, made a mistake, and that can happen even if you have 300 races under your belt," said the Ferrari driver.

"But I don't think it's a matter of age. He already has a few races under his belt now. In such situations, he just has to be a little more patient," Vettel added.

F1 legend and Mercedes team chairman Lauda was much more critical of Verstappen, as his mistakes continue to mount.

"Normally, you learn from your mistakes, but it doesn't work with him. At some point, it's no longer a question of age, but a matter of intelligence," he said.

However, F1 race director Charlie Whiting said the FIA is not going to intervene.

"I think the stewards did their job and nothing else is necessary," he said. "I believe he made a mistake and got his punishment."

N Lauda is spot on. Too many races have been spoilt by him doing the same mistake over and over again, particularly at the start of races. He deserves more than 10 seconds penalties.

So very right! They should dock positions only as the cars are always too far apart! You would think they would have this figured out by now, Wait maybe they do know this and they did it on purpose so Max wouldn't loose anything? They have been overly favorable to him so far in F1, they should treat him the same way they treated Grosein for doing the same back when....

The thing is that the whole point with racing is that the faster driver should winn.
Its not an intelligence competion it should be a fight man against man but when you have drivers like
Vettel Hamilton (same with Rossi in MotoGP) that allways will block at any cost you will have crashes.
Veerstapen is a much faster driver than vettel and hamilton soo how shall he do, waiting and overtake in the pits or what type of racing should f1 be. Right now we have had som good fight just beacuse Mercedes good days maybe are over.

  • Jazzi: "... so far in 2018"? What a laugh ?. Its pitiful to see a former world champion, superb driver and thoroughly pleasant chap get treated so shoddily. Respect to the Iceman for maintaining his class and dignity amidst Ferrari's disgraceful practices. They self-destructed last season, poetic justice some may say. If so, the implosion may be even worse this year because Kimi is genuinely competive. He out-qualified Seb in Melbourne, and in the last 2 qualifying sessions, he was only edged off pole by Seb in the final flying rounds of Q3. Yet, he still gets screwed by the Ferrari strategist in the races. Pathetic! View Post
