Weather: dry, hot, sunny
Lewis HAMILTON won his 10th F1 World Championship race at the 2009 Hungary F1 GP, McLarens first victory of the season with the KERS-equipped MP4-24. The McLaren driver started fourth and won at the Hungaroring by 11.529 seconds from Kimi Raikkonen for Ferrari. It was McLarens 158th F1 win.
Massas terrible qualifying accident
Saturday 25 July 2009 at the Hungaroring was overshadowed by Felipe Massas horrific crash in Q2. A coil spring shed from Barrichellos Brawn struck Massa on the helmet at high speed, knocking him unconscious and leading to a heavy impact with the tyre wall. He was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening head injuries and would miss the rest of the season. Alonso took pole for Renault with a 1:21.569, Vettel second, Webber third, Hamilton fourth.
Race day: Hamilton delivers McLarens breakthrough
Alonso lost the lead when a loose wheel forced retirement early on. Hamilton, running a lighter fuel strategy and enjoying the McLarens KERS boost on the start-finish straight, took the lead after the stops and controlled the run home. Raikkonen second for Ferrari after a strong drive, Webber third for Red Bull. Rosberg fourth for Williams, Kovalainen fifth for the sister McLaren, Glock sixth. Webber set the fastest lap at 1:21.931 on lap 65. Buttons seventh finish was another blow to his title bid.
Championship: Button 70, Barrichello 54, Vettel 47
McLarens season had turned in Budapest, and Buttons form continued to slide. Europe at Valencia in a month would be next after the summer break.
