Sep.15 - The world of sports has always thrived on fierce, down-to-the-wire rivalries. For instance, over the past decade and a half, soccer fans have endlessly debated the GOAT status of icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. In tennis, the legendary Big Three, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, dominated the sport, with more than 60 Grand Slam titles among them.

Today, attention turns to Formula 1 where there is an ongoing rivalry fuelled by a thirst for championship victory. Even more insane is the fact that these two competitors are teammates! Yes, they both are drivers for McLaren, and they are none other than Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. With more than half of the races already run, the title challenge is now truly neck and neck.

In this article, Kate Richardson, betting expert at MightyTips analyzes the contests and gives a fair assessment of what to expect when the 2025 season winds to a close. Let's get right into the meat of the article, shall we?

Tracing the Origins and Progress of the Hottest Formula 1 Title Battle in Years

If you thought intra-team title fights between Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg or Red Bull teammates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber were mind-blowing, then Oscar Piastri vs Lando Norris would surely knock your socks off.

The rivalry first started when Oscar Piastri joined McLaren in 2023 as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo. For Lando Norris who has had a few seasons under his belt with the team, it didn't seem like the 24-year-old who just joined would pose any threat.

However, at the start of the season, Lando who went off to a great start quickly saw Piastri overtake him. Fuelled by the super machine vehicle, the McLaren MCL39, both drivers have been going at each other ever since then.

While they remain very good teammates, there is no doubt each of them wants a chance at becoming champion. Norris has expressed this sentiment many times.

“I feel like there's a very prescribed version of how people say a world champion should be: overly aggressive. I want to win the championship but I'd rather be a good person and try to do well," Norris told the Guardian ahead of the Japanese GP. "I'll do whatever I can to win a championship, but maybe I won't sacrifice my life as much as some people do, in terms of personal values... I still believe I can become a world champion and still be a nice guy."

This rivalry has further been fuelled by certain intra-McLaren team orders and strategy swap as well as one remarkable incident, all of which we'll consider across each of the 15 races already completed below.

Round 1: Norris Clinches Win Over Max Verstappen in Australian GP

With the first race of the season, Lando Norris held onto a pole position win, despite heavy rainfall and Piastri trailing behind his team-mate for much of the first half on home soil. However, Lando would claim 25 points from the win, with Oscar placing ninth behind Charles Leclerc.

Round 2: Oscar Claims First Win of the Season in China

In Shanghai, Piastri staged a comeback for the ages finishing +9.748s ahead of his Briton McLaren team-mate, thereby reducing the deficit between both drivers. Norris managed a second-place finish despite complaining about brakes towards the end of the event.

Round 3: Verstappen Reclaims Lead in Japan's Suzuka Circuit

Last year, four-time F1 champion Max Verstappen joined an exclusive list of drivers with four or more titles. He proved his worth at Japan, outpacing both McLarens with 25-year-old Norris in second position.

Round 4: Piastri Solidifies Dominance in Asia with Bahrain Win

Although Piastri won in Bahrain, cumulative points from the first three races meant Norris topped the championship leadership albeit with one point.

Round 5: Norris Crash Helps Piastri Break National Record

Norris suffered a crash in Q3 of Qualifying in Saudi Arabia. As fate would also have it, Verstappen got a five-second penalty, thereby helping Piastri secure victory. The Kiwi became the first Australian to lead overall standings in 15 years.

Round 6: McLaren Drivers Secure 1-2 Spot in Standings

Back in 2024, in Miami, Norris secured a massive debut win. However, history did not repeat itself due to a mistake. Piastri didn't take advantage either finishing fourth in Qualifying. Nonetheless, both drivers maintained the first and second positions for their team.

Round 7: Another Verstappen Win in Imola

The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix saw the Dutch Red Bull driver win again while Lando and Oscar lined up in second and third place, respectively.

Round 8: Ferrari Driver Fails to Live Up to Practice Session Hype

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc led every practice session in his home race in Monaco. But that did not mean much in the Qualifying as Lando managed to defeat him at the end. Oscar would make a podium finish in third, though.

Round 9: Only Two Seconds Separate Piastri and Norris in Spain

At Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Oscar and Lando finished within two seconds of each other. However, for Piastri, this meant a ten-point lead on the standings.

Round 10: Drama in McLaren Camp; Team Principal Tags Incident "Not Acceptable"

Montreal was the scene of a massive incident which had a major impact on the rivalry. Both team-mates collided on the track while Norris was looking to cross into fourth. Taking responsibility for the damage, the Briton pulled off the track while Oscar finally took fourth position. George Russell bested all other riders to come in first, while Max was second and Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli finished third.

Round 11: Norris Goes Fifteen Points Clear of Closest Contender

After 10 races, Lando won in the Austrian Grand Prix to extend his lead in the championship fight by 15 points. In the Sunday's race, Piastri emerged second while Leclerc was in third.

Round 12: Kick Sauber Driver Joins McLaren Pair in Podium Finish

Norris saw an opportunity to put up his best performance in front of his home crowd and he surely took it. German driver Nico HĂĽlkenberg also earned a podium finish for the first time in the season while a 10-second penalty kept Piastri in second place.

Round 13: Oscar Back to Winning Ways After Three Races

It didn't take long for the Australian to bounce back after back to back podium finishes without emerging in pole position. Lando came in second but his overall position in the standings remained unaffected.

Round 14: Lando Extends Lead Before Summer Break

Just before the summer shutdown was the race in Hungary which resulted in a Norris win. Piastri was a runner-up while George Russell completed the set in third place.

Round 15: Norris Suffers Major Setback in Circuit Zandvoort

A power unit problem caused Norris heartbreak in the Netherlands as he could not finish the Dutch Grand Prix. Piastri, on the other hand, took full advantage to qualify in pole position.

Round 16: Team Orders Spark Norris–Piastri Tension at Monza

Neither McLaren could live up to Verstappen’s pace and a slow pit stop put Norris behind Piastri, forcing the team to intervene with orders to Norris back P2. Both drivers made the famous Italian GP podium, yet the mood in papaya was far from celebratory.

Bottom Line: Can Norris Overturn Piastri's 31 Points Lead From Where it Stands?

Oscar lost 3 points due to the forced team order at Monza to his teammate and now leads by 31 points. However, with eight races to go, there is still all to play for among both competitors. But it's going to be extremely difficult and even Norris acknowledges this.

"It's a bit more difficult now, but I don't expect much to change. I think we'll race each other the same way. I think the amount of risk taking will be the same," Piastri said to journalists. "We're both trying to be as fast as we can. It's not like we've been holding anything back from that side of things. So I don't expect anything to change."

That said, here's where the beauty of the sport lies. The gap may look daunting, but Formula 1 history is littered with comeback stories. So, it’s now Piastri’s title to lose. But as long as Norris keeps pushing, this McLaren intra-team rivalry promises to go down as one of the fiercest and most unpredictable battles of the modern era.
