Stoffel Vandoorne hopes that a season in Super Formula will boost his chances of a 2017 drive at McLaren.
The reserve driver has been seemingly on the brink of an F1 drive for some time, but the team opted to sign Fernando Alonso to join Jenson Button last season.
McLaren has seen Vandoorne and Kevin Magnussen at the future of the team for some time, but the Belgian hopes he won’t suffer the same fate at the Dane – who didn’t compete in any racing series last year.
“Kevin came off the back of a Formula 1 campaign and was the reserve for a season without possibilities to race anything beside that,” he told Autosport.
"Kevin didn't have a lot of track time but hopefully in my case, it will be quite a bit different.
"If the Super Formula deal goes ahead, I will also have some racing experience.
"Hopefully I'll have some F1 testing beside that as well so it will be quite a bit different."
