2010 Hungary F1 Grand Prix Race Report & Results

Event: Hungarian Grand Prix
Track: Hungaroring
Weather: dry, hot, sunny
Mark WEBBER won his 6th F1 World Championship race at the 2010 Hungary F1 GP, capitalising on a Vettel error to take the championship lead into the summer break. The Red Bull driver started second and won at the Hungaroring by 17.821 seconds from Fernando Alonso for Ferrari. It was Red Bulls 11th F1 win.
Vettel pole, one-stop strategies in the air
The Hungaroring on 1 August 2010 saw Vettel take pole with a 1:18.773 lap, Webber second by 0.411, Alonso third for Ferrari. The heat and abrasive surface made one-stop strategies theoretically possible, adding another wrinkle to a season already defined by strategy calls.
Race day: Vettels safety-car error, Schumacher squeezes Barrichello
The race turned on lap 16 when a safety car was deployed. Vettel, leading, backed the pack up too much and dropped more than the mandated 10-car-length gap. Webber, on a one-stop that made the safety car a windfall, ran a hugely long stint to lap 43 before pitting and rejoined ahead. Vettel served his drive-through penalty and finished third. Alonso second for Ferrari, Massa fourth. Schumacher squeezed Rubens Barrichello into the pit wall down the pit straight at 300 km/h in a moment that shocked the paddock; the stewards handed him a 10-place grid penalty for the next race. Vettel set the fastest lap on lap 70 at 1:22.362.
Championship: Webber 161, Hamilton 157, Vettel 151
Webber took over the championship lead into the summer break, four drivers within 20 points. Belgium at Spa in a month would restart the season.
