Watkins Glen International, located in the Finger Lakes region of New York state, opened in 1956 and hosted the United States Grand Prix from 1961 to 1980 — the longest American tenure on the F1 calendar. The 5.435 km layout was beloved by drivers for its flowing high-speed character through the rolling upstate New York countryside. F1 left after 1980 due to financial troubles; Watkins Glen remains a major NASCAR road-course venue today.
