Chris Amon Biography

1972 Monaco Grand Prix: F1 Race Winner, Podium & Results

Matra-Simca MS120D driven by Chris Amon at Monaco (1972)

Chris Amon was born on July 20, 1943, in Bulls, New Zealand. He grew up in a racing family, with his father competing in hill climbs and his uncle racing motorcycles. As a young boy, Amon developed a passion for speed, and it wasn't long before he began to make a name for himself as a talented driver.

In 1963, Amon made his Formula One debut with the Parnell Racing Team driving a Lola Mk4. He quickly established himself as a talented driver, and it wasn't long before he was being courted by some of the biggest names in the sport.

Over the course of his F1 career, Amon competed for a variety of teams, including Cooper, Brabham, and Ferrari. He was known for his smooth driving style and his ability to get the most out of his car. He was also known for his bad luck, as he often found himself in promising positions only to be let down by mechanical failures.

Despite never winning a race, Amon was widely respected by his fellow drivers and is still considered to be one of the greatest drivers of his generation. He finished on the podium a total of 11 times, and he was a regular feature in the top 10 throughout his career.

After retiring from F1 in 1976, Amon remained involved in the sport as a consultant and driver coach. He also established his own racing team, Chris Amon Racing, which competed in various events around the world.

Sadly, Amon passed away in 2016 at the age of 73. However, his legacy lives on in the many drivers he influenced and inspired, as well as in the countless fans who continue to admire his skill and passion for the sport.
