Lance Stroll Biography

Williams F1 Factory, Grove, Oxfordshire. Lance Stroll.

Williams F1 Factory, Lance Stroll

Like many race drivers, the Geneva-based Canadian Lance Stroll began his Motorsport career in karting and recorded numerous race and championship wins in his native Canada and North America.

At the beginning of 2015, Stroll won the New Zealand-based Toyota Racing Series, recording 10 podiums – including four wins – from 16 race starts. The same year he also contested the FIA Euro F3 Series with the Italian Prema team, winning one race outright and achieving 17 top-six overall race finishes in the ultra-competitive 33-race series driving a Dallara F312 Mercedes.

Stroll closed out his busy 2015 season – contesting 50 races in all – making his debut in the Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix. Stroll was part of the Ferrari Driver Academy and the second youngest driver to be signed to a Formula One team. On 11 November 2015, it was announced that Stroll would leave Ferrari to serve as a test driver for Williams.

In 2016 Stroll remained with the Prema Powerteam, for a third consecutive year, to contest the Euro F3 Series for a second year. He began 2016 by finishing 5th in the Rolex 24 at Daytona in a Ford Chip Ganassi Racing entered Ford EcoBoost Prototype to become the youngest highest-placed overall finisher in the history of the event.

In the 2016 Euro F3 series, Stroll took eleven wins and claimed the title in the second race at Imola, over a hundred points clear of his main rival Maximilian Günther.

On 3 November 2016, Williams Martini Racing announced that Stroll will drive for them in 2017 Formula One season. He will become the first Canadian F1 driver since the 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, who coincidentally started his F1 career at Williams.

Race winner Daniel Ricciardo of Australia and Red Bull Racing celebrates his win on the podium with third placed finisher Lance Stroll of Canada and Williams during the Azerbaijan Formula One Grand Prix at Baku City Circuit on June 25, 2017 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

2017 wasn't a bad season for Williams. The team finished 4th in the constructors championship and Stroll was only 3 points behind former Ferrari driver Felipe Massa.

The 2018 season was horrible for Stroll at Williams. The Williams FW41 was the slowest car on the grid and Lance only could score 6 points and end up as 18th in the drivers' championship.

Halfway through the 2018 season the father of Lance bought the Force India shares and changed the name to Racing Point for 2019 with his son as 2nd driver next to Sergio Pérez. This is the season in which Stroll can show what he's made of. In the first 2 races of the season he outperformed his highly-rated teammate Sergio Pérez.

Even though Perez was dominant in qualifying in the first half of 2019, leading Stroll 12-0, the Canadian was better on Sundays, scoring 18 points against the Mexican's 13. His best finish in the first half of 2019 occurred in Germany, where he led the race and eventually finished fourth.

In the second half, Stroll could not compete against his experienced teammate. The Canadian only scored points in two of the last nine races (10th at Spa and ninth at Japan).

He ended the year in 15th in the WDC with just  21 points.

Stroll scored points in six of the first seven races in 2020, and in the eighth round, the 2020 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, he achieved the second podium of his career with a good third place that could have been a win if he had a good start in the second start of the GP.

In the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, Stroll silenced his critics after achieving his first-career Pole Position in wet conditions. In the race, he led comfortably in the first part before an issue in his front wing pushed him back to ninth.

Then, Stroll finished third in the Sakhir Grand Prix, where teammate Sergio Pérez won the race for Racing Point. That was Stroll's second podium of 2020 and the third of his F1 career.

The Canadian driver finished 11th in the 2020 standings with 75 points (the best tally of his career so far).

New teammate for the 2021 F1 season and a tough year

Previously known as Racing Point and with highly competitive races in 2020, the new Aston Martin team ran into several issues during the 2021 F1 season, and Lance Stroll struggled to consistently perform at a high level.

Still, he finished the season only nine points behind his teammate, four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel, in the World Drivers' Championship. Stroll finished 13th in the WDC with 34 points, but could not replicate the podium finishes he had in 2020, and his best result of the entire 2021 season was sixth place in the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix.

In the first nine races of the 2022 Formula 1 season, Aston Martin struggled, and Lance Stroll scored points in three races.

He finished 10th in the 2022 Emilia Romagna and Miami Grands Prix and then scored points (another 10th place) in his home race in Canada for the third time in his career (in four chances).

In the 2022 French Grand Prix, Stroll finished 10th after keeping his experienced teammate, Sebastian Vettel, behind in a last-lap battle. It was the Canadian's fourth P10 of 2022 and his second consecutive point-scoring finish in France.

Stroll finished 15th in the 2022 F1 standings with 18 points, while Vettel scored 37 in his final season.

Starting 2023 with an injury

Before the 2023 Pre-season Testing for the new F1 season, Aston Martin announced that Stroll would miss the three-day running after sustaining injuries in a bike accident while training.

Stroll fought through his injuries and scored sixth place in the first race of 2023 at Bahrain. After a mechanical DNF in the second race of the year, Stroll finished fourth in the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, reaching his best result in a Grand Prix since Racing Point changed to Aston Martin.

Stroll hit a rough patch for most of the season and having two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso performing alongside him made Stroll's struggles look worse.

The Canadian scored points in his home Grand Prix in June and kept scoring consistently, but Alonso was often on the podium and left Stroll looking badly. Midway through the season, Stroll had a five-race streak without scoring points, even missing the 2023 Singapore GP after a heavy crash in Qualifying wrecked his car and left him sore.

Still, the Canadian driver made a good push in the final races of the season. Stroll finished the year scoring points in four of the last five events, including consecutive P5 finishes at Brazil and Las Vegas.
