Event: Dutch Grand Prix
Track: Circuit Zandvoort

Weather: overcast, dry, breezy

Niki Lauda won his 15th F1 World Championship race at the 1977 Dutch Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver started from 4th on the grid and won on the Zandvoort circuit for the 1st time. It was also his 3rd win of the season and the 68th win for the Ferrari F1 team.

Lauda all but settles it at Zandvoort

The 1977 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort took Niki Lauda’s championship advantage out to 21 points with four races left, effectively decisive given the dropped-scores system in operation. Mario Andretti took pole position and tangled with James Hunt at Tarzan on lap six. Hunt’s suspension folded; Andretti carried on, then expired with the year’s fourth consecutive engine failure on lap 14.

The race

Jacques Laffite then led for fifteen laps in the Ligier-Matra short-wheelbase spare, which had been thrown together after the race car suffered a huge oil leak in the warm-up. Lauda passed him at the line on lap 20 and traded the lead with him for a few laps before settling at the front. Laffite stayed in the Ferrari’s mirrors all the way to the flag, a few car lengths in arrears.

Patrick Tambay drove the Ensign-Theodore to a fine third place but ran out of fuel on the last lap; Jody Scheckter inherited the podium. Fittipaldi a strong fourth in the Copersucar F5, Tambay still classified fifth, Reutemann sixth after a midrace spin. Hunt was officially out of the championship. Jabouille pulled the Renault turbo into the top ten before retiring with a broken left-rear suspension.
