Which Drivers Have the Most Wins in Austrian GP?

As Formula 1 heads to the Red Bull Ring for the eighth round of the 2026 season, here is a look at the drivers who have won the Austrian Grand Prix most often.

Max Verstappen

Red Bull's Max Verstappen leads the list with four wins, the most of any driver in the history of the Austrian Grand Prix. He won in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023, while also winning the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix at the same circuit.

The Dutchman also has four Pole Positions in the Austrian Grand Prix, another record for the race.

Alain Prost holds second place with three wins, having won in 1983 (for Renault), 1985 and 1986 (McLaren) at the old Österreichring (the first version of the current Red Bull Ring).

Prost's 1983 win was his last for Renault (his ninth career win and the ninth with the team).

Moreover, his win in the 1986 race was his 24th career victory, equalling the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio's tally of F1 wins.

Six drivers are tied for third place with two wins each:

Ronnie Peterson – won in 1973 and 1978 for Lotus. His 1978 victory at the Österreichring was the final win of his career before his fatal crash at Monza.

Alan Jones – won in 1977 with Shadow and 1979 with Williams. His 1977 win for the Shadow team was his first victory in F1.

Mika Häkkinen – won in 1998 and 2000 for McLaren-Mercedes.

Michael Schumacher – won in 2002 and 2003 for Ferrari. The 2002 race was controversial due to Ferrari issuing team orders to pole-sitter Rubens Barrichello.

Nico Rosberg – won in 2014 and 2015 for Mercedes.

Valtteri Bottas – won in 2017 and 2020 for Mercedes.

Many other drivers have one win each, including legends like Jacky Ickx (1970 - Ferrari), Emerson Fittipaldi (1972 - Lotus), home hero Niki Lauda (1984 - McLaren), Nigel Mansell (1987 - Williams) and Lewis Hamilton (2016 - Mercedes).
