Massa pole with Ferrari back on top
The Bahrain International Circuit on 15 April 2007 opened with Felipe Massa taking pole with a 1:32.652 lap for Ferrari, Hamilton second in his third F1 race, Raikkonen third for Ferrari. Alonso only fourth for McLaren. Massas Ferrari pace was decisive on the abrasive Bahrain surface.
Race day: Massa lights-to-flag, Hamilton hangs on for second
Massa led 51 of the 57 laps, controlling the race throughout. Hamilton, running his own race brilliantly, took second at 2.360 seconds ahead of Raikkonen for another rookie podium. Alonso only fifth, undone by strategic decisions that did not quite work. Heidfeld fourth for BMW Sauber, Kubica sixth in the second BMW Sauber. Massa also set the fastest lap on lap 42 with a 1:34.067.
Hamiltons three-in-a-row podiums
Lewis Hamiltons second at Bahrain gave him podium finishes in his first three F1 races, an unprecedented start for a rookie. He now led the drivers championship with 22 points, level with Alonso and Raikkonen, all on 22 after three races.
Championship: Hamilton 22, Alonso 22, Raikkonen 22
A three-way tie at the top after Bahrain. McLaren 44 constructors, Ferrari 38, BMW Sauber 20. Spain in a fortnight would be Alonsos home Grand Prix.
