Jacques Villeneuve clinched his first and only Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship in 1997 with 81 points, taking seven wins, eight podiums and 10 pole positions along the way. The Canadian driver finished 39 points clear of his teammate, Heinz-Harald Frentzen. The team of both drivers, Williams, also took their ninth Constructors' Championship with 123 points and eight race wins. It was their second constructors' crown in a row.

Villeneuve only wrapped up the title at the season finale, the European Grand Prix, while his team Williams had already secured the Constructors' crown one round earlier, at the Japanese Grand Prix (round 16 of 17).

The 1997 title fight is best remembered for its explosive finale at Jerez, where Michael Schumacher turned in on Villeneuve while defending the championship lead. The driver retired on the spot, Villeneuve survived the contact and finished third, enough to become World Champion. Schumacher was later excluded from the Drivers' Championship for the incident, which is why Heinz-Harald Frentzen appears as runner-up in the final official standings.
