What Does PU-ANC Mean in F1?
PU-ANC stands for Power Unit Ancillary Components. It is an FIA term used for a group of supporting components connected to a F1 car's power unit.
Unlike major power unit elements such as the internal combustion engine (ICE), turbocharger (TC) or MGU-K, PU-ANC covers a range of smaller systems and components required for the power unit to operate correctly.
What are Power Unit Ancillary Components?
In parole povere, ancillary components are the supporting parts around the main F1 alimentatore.
The FIA Technical Regulations identify exactly which components are classed as PU-ANC. Examples include parts of the intake system, high-pressure fuel system, fuel injectors, wastegate and pop-off valve systems, the main power unit oil tank, breather systems, ERS cooling components and parts of the hydraulic control system.
Not every component attached to the power unit is a PU-ANC. The FIA specifically marks the components that belong to this category in the PU-ANC column of its Technical Regulations.
How many PU-ANC components can an F1 driver use?
Per la 2026 F1 season, the regulations specify a basic allocation of five of each PU-ANC component. However, every driver is permitted one additional unit during the 2026 Championship, effectively giving drivers an allocation of sei before a grid penalty is triggered.
This is why FIA technical delegate reports during the 2026 season generally refer to drivers being allowed six new PU-ANC units.
What happens if a driver exceeds the PU-ANC limit?
PU-ANC is part of F1's restricted power unit component system.
If a driver exceeds the permitted allocation, the first additional component of that type results in a Penalità di 10 posizioni in griglia. Further additional components of the same type result in five-place grid penalties.
The regulations also allow PU-ANC components to be transferred between a driver's sealed power unit elements without automatically causing a penalty.
