Manor F1 Team History
They started as Caterham’s friendly rivals at the back of the grid, but now Manor are alone as they scrap at the back.
Previously known as Marussia, the team have survived several hardships to make it this far.
They entered the sport in 2010 as Virgin Racing after Richard Branson invested heavily in the team as he tried to emulate his success of being the leading sponsor of Brawn GP who won the 2009 Drivers and Constructors Championships.
Unfortunately that didn’t materialise as Virgin lacked the infrastructure, the cars and the drivers to follow in Brawns footsteps. Branson withdrew his investment after just two poor seasons but the team was saved by Russian manufacturers Marussia who bought the team.
Marussia had struck a promising partnership with Ferrari which will see the Italian team supply Marussia’s engines. This builds on already friendly terms as Ferrari allowed their young driver Jules Bianchi to drive for Marussia this season.
Sadly, a terrible accident in Japan injured Bianchi badly and a few months later he died. At the same time, a dire financial issue saw the team fold.
But with some late investment they came back from the brink and survived. Now, with a new name, they can see a brighter future. Points are not out of the equation anymore.
