Weather: wet qualifying, mixed race

Fernando ALONSO won his 27th F1 World Championship race at the 2011 Britain F1 GP, Ferraris first victory of the year and a clean pass on Vettel in the pit stops. The Ferrari driver started third and won at Silverstone by 16.511 seconds from Sebastian Vettel for Red Bull. It was Ferraris 217th F1 win.

Webber pole in the wet, Red Bull off-throttle-blowing ban

Silverstone on 10 July 2011 opened with the mid-season regulation change banning off-throttle exhaust blowing, an aerodynamic loophole Red Bull had exploited best. Webber took pole in a wet Q3 with a 1:30.399 lap, Vettel second by 0.032, Alonso third for Ferrari, Massa fourth. Sunday was dry.

Race day: Alonso undercut, Ferrari back in the win column

Vettel led from lights out over Webber, but Ferrari executed a sharp undercut on Alonsos second stop that jumped him ahead of Vettel out of the pits. From there Alonso pulled clear to win by 16 seconds, Ferraris first victory of 2011. Vettel second, Webber third (a botched final pit stop cost him second), Hamilton fourth for McLaren, Massa fifth for Ferrari, Rosberg sixth for Mercedes GP. Alonso set the fastest lap on lap 41 at 1:34.908.

Championship: Vettel 204, Webber 124, Alonso 112

Vettels lead was 80 points; Alonso had finally added his first win of the year but the margin looked prohibitive with nine rounds left. Germany at the Nurburgring in a fortnight would be next.
