The start of the race was without any incidents. Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton almost passed his team mate Valterri Bottas in turn 1. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc who started from P7 has bad start, because he was the only one who started on medium tyres. When his harder medium tyres were in the operating window he really got up to speed and passed 5 cars to P4. After 14 laps he even took the lead of the race when all other drivers on soft tyres had pitted.

Sebastian Vettel was the first driver out of the top 3 who did his pitstop. He pitted in Lap 12. Race leader Valtteri Bottas did the same a lap later in the Mercedes. His team mate Hamilton also pitted a lap later than Bottas to switch to Medium tyres.

Because of this error Kvyat also couldn't make the turn. Ricciardo drove backwards to return to the track, but didn't watch his mirror. He didn't watch out and hit the Toro Rosso of Kvyat. 2 F1 Fan comments on “Race Results 2019 Azerbaijan F1 Grand Prix

  1. Rod

I am shocked that any F1 fan still believes the pre-race hype coming from Mercedes re the so-called "Ferrari edge". It doesn't exist. All they're trying to do is get fans to watch in the hope there is such a thing. But there isn't. This series, after more than 50 years of great racing, is dead in the water.

Once again tyre management is the big focus for all teams. When will Liberty realize fans want to see true wheel to wheel outright racing without drivers having to " look after " the tyres.
