History

AlphaTauri F1 team History

The Scuderia AlphaTauri entered Formula 1 in the 2020 season after Toro Rosso changed its name to promote Red Bull’s clothing brand AlphaTauri.

Toro Rosso had been a household name in Formula 1 since entering the series in 2006 and had won a race (the 2008 Italian Grand Prix) and finished on the podium twice in its final season under the old name, in 2019.

The Faenza-based team announced that it was set to become Red Bull’s sister team, instead of the junior squad to the main team. The claims were confirmed by Red Bull’s advisor Helmut Marko.

The name AlphaTauri was announced on 1 December 2019, the day of the final race for the Toro Rosso name to date.

AlphaTauri’s first car, the AT01, was set to debut in March 2020, during the 2020 Australian Grand Prix. However, the Covid-19 pandemic changed plans, and the car’s first race was the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix on 5 July 2020.

Pierre Gasly scored the team’s first points in the first race, finishing seventh. Daniil Kvyat gave the team a second point-scoring finish in two races, finishing 10th in the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix, also held at Austria’s Red Bull Ring.

'Something has changed' after party mode ban

The team scored points in four of the following five races before Pierre Gasly took an impressive and emotional win in the 2020 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Although with a new name title, the Italian team won again at Monza after Gasly held off McLaren’s Carlos Sainz for a victory celebrated in almost every corner of the F1 paddock.

The team ended the 2020 F1 season with seventh place in the World Constructors’ Championship but with a tally of points that surpassed any season under the Toro Rosso title.

For the 2021 season, Japanese rookie Yuki Tsunoda replaced Kvyat as Gasly’s teammate and the team put up an even greater season, scoring 142 points and finishing sixth in the WCC.

Gasly recorded a podium for the third consecutive season after finishing third in the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

With the same driver lineup, AlphaTauri has struggled to find consistency in 2022, but still recorded a Top-5 finish with Gasly, as the French driver finished the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in a solid fifth place.

On 22 September 2022, the team announced Yuki Tsunoda was staying for a third season in 2023, while Pierre Gasly was announced as Fernando Alonso's replacement for 2023 at Alpine on 8 October 2022. Nyck De Vries was announced as Gasly's replacement on the same day as the Frenchman left the Red Bull camp.

AlphaTauri had its worst season since the name change in 2019, scoring just 35 points (as opposed to the 142 points of 2021 - sixth in the 2021 WCC). In 2022, AlphaTauri finished ninth in the World Constructors' Championship.

The trend continued in 2023 and AlphaTauri scored only 28 points and was eighth in the WCC, with Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo as the drivers in the season's end. Both drivers were confirmed for 2024, while Franz Tosto, the Team Principal since the team's creation as Toro Rosso i n2006, left at the end of 2023.

Laurent Mekies came in as the new Team Principal and the team was also rebranded as RB Formula One Team, with Visa Cas App F1 Team as the name of the entrant.

On 8 February 2024, the team presented its new car, the VCARB 01.
