Oscar Piastri Biography

Oscar Piastri (AUS) Renault Sport Academy Driver celebrates winning the F3 Championship. Sakhir Grand Prix, Sunday 6th December 2020
Oscar Piastri began his racing career in karting, winning several national and international karting championships before moving on to compete in junior formula racing. He was the 2018 Australian Formula Ford Champion before joining the Renault Sport Academy in 2019.
In 2020, he made his debut in the FIA Formula 2 Championship. He had a solid rookie season, finishing 7th overall in the drivers' standings, and achieved 2 podium finishes. The following year, he signed with the Prema Racing team, won one of the races in the opening round of the championship, and went on to win the championship in 2021.
His success in F2 led to him being signed by the Renault F1 Team as a development driver for the 2022 season, making him the youngest Australian to ever be signed to an F1 team.
Piastri's performances have caught the attention of the F1 world, and he is considered one of the rising stars in motorsports, with many experts predicting that he has a bright future ahead in the sport.
On 2 September 2022, McLaren announced Australian Oscar Piastri as their driver for 2023. The Australian, the 2021 F2 championship, and McLaren had to go through a contract dispute with Alpine, which was settled by Formula 1's Contract Recognition Board (CRB).
Alpine had announced Piastri as its 2023 driver alongside Esteban Ocon. However, Piastri himself posted a tweet in which he denied that information. Ultimately, McLaren took Piastri off Alpine's hands, and the Australian joined the Woking team.
Rough start to his F1 career, but two podiums and a Sprint win showed his speed

Piastri's Formula 1 career started with a mechanical DNF in the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix and a 15th-place finish in the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix (although he reached Q3 in the second event, out-qualifying his teammate).
However, red flags, incidents, and a bit of luck helped Piastri score his first career points in the 2023 Australian grand prix in Melbourne, where he was born.
Piastri finished eighth in the race and helped McLaren end its scoreless run in 2023, with his teammate Lando Norris finishing sixth.
In the 2023 British grand prix, Piastri qualified third, right behind his teammate, and then drove a tremendous race to finish a career-high fourth. In the early stage of the race, Piastri looked on pace for his first F1 podium, but the result was still great for the Australian racer.
That was the third point-scoring finish of his F1 career, having previously finished 10th in the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix.
In the 2023 Hungarian grand prix, Piastri finished the race in fifth place after qualifying fourth. At this point, McLaren had definitely become the second-best car on the field, with Piastri and especially Lando Norris fighting for podiums consistently.
The Australian fought for the win in the 2023 Belgian grand prix Sprint Race, but ultimately finished second. On Sunday, however, Piastri retired from the race, and bad results followed (ninth in Zandvoort, 12th in Italy after a collision with Lewis Hamilton, and seventh in Singapore).
On 24 September 2023, Piastri scored his first career podium with a solid P3 in the 2023 Japanese grand prix, after qualifying in second place and starting on the front row for the first time in his F1 career.
His first podium in Japan preceded a win in the Sprint Race in Qatar, and a career-best finish of P2 in the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, rounding out an incredible weekend for the F1 rookie.
After those two consecutive podiums, Piastri had a rough end to the season, with a sixth place in the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix being his best result in the final five races of the year (he went scoreless in two of those).
Ultimately, Piastri's rookie season finished with him in ninth place with 97 points, a couple of podiums, a win in a Sprint Race, and two Fastest Laps (Monza and Las Vegas).

The 2024 Formula 1 season saw Piastri's rise to an elite driver in the series. The Australian began the season scoring points consistently, but with some tricky performances. Then, he achieved his first podium of the year with second place at Monaco and went on to win the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix for his maiden victory.
Piastri had some stellar performances midway through the season and was second in Belgium and Italy before winning the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix after a thrilling battle with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
Piastri was fourth among drivers in the 2024 campaign and helped McLaren secure their first World Constructors' Championship since 1998. The Australian scored 292 points thanks to two wins and eight podiums overall.

As McLaren came into the 2025 F1 season with a great car, which led the way, many expected Lando Norris to continue his dominance inside the McLaren garage.
However, Piastri demonstrated great speed and racecraft in the first part of the season, quickly establishing himself as a contender for the championship.
The season started badly for Piastri, with a spin in the wet, leaving him ninth in Australia. However, he went on to win four of the next five races, taking the lead in the fifth race of the season in Saudi Arabia.
Piastri's three-race winning streak was snapped at Imola, where he finished third, a result he repeated in Monaco.
He followed it up with a win in the 2025 Spanish grand prix from Pole Position. Fourth place in Montreal was followed by a couple of P2s, both behind Norris in Austria and Silverstone. In Britain, Piastri would've won the event without a 10-second penalty he earned for allegedly driving erratically behind the Safety Car.
Piastri's form returned with victory at Spa-Francorchamps. Another win, at Zandvoort, saw Piastri extend his lead in the championship to 34 points over his teammate, Norris, who retired from the race due to an oil leak.
Also, Piastri's advantage over Red Bull's Max Verstappen sat at 104 points after the Dutch F1 GP, a lead seemingly impossible to lose with nine races left.
The Australian then entered a slump, finishing third in Monza before crashing out in Azerbaijan, where he also crashed during Qualifying.
In the following four races, Piastri finished outside the podium. In the 20th race of the year in Mexico, Norris won, while Piastri finished fifth. The result put Norris back into the lead of the drivers' standings, for the first time since Bahrain (the fourth race of the year).
Piastri's chances then shrank in Brazil, where he crashed out of the Sprint and was only fifth in the Grand Prix as Norris won both.
A double McLaren disqualification in Las Vegas left Piastri 24 points behind Norris, but he was now tied with Verstappen for second place, with two races left (and a Sprint in Qatar).
The Australian returned to form in Qatar, winning the Sprint from Pole and also taking Pole Position for the Grand Prix. However, the Grand Prix was a different one, as Pirelli imposed a limit to the laps done y each tyre during the weekend, thus creating a mandatory two-stop race.
Tyres could not do more than 25 laps, and the race had 57 laps. As the Safety Car came out precisely on lap 7, everyone went into the pits, except for the McLarens, with Piastri leading and Norris third. McLaren then had a 1-2, but had to pit twice in the remainder of the race, while the rest had to pit just once.
Without any other neutralization, Piastri lost the race to Verstappen due to the strategic mistake and saw his title chances heavily impacted. Piastri left Qatar in third place in the WDC, 16 points behind the leader, Norris, and four points behind Verstappen.
In the final race at Abu Dhabi, Piastri could only finish second as Verstappen won. As Norris finished third, the British driver won the championship by two points over Verstappen.
The Australian driver, on his side, had to settle for third in a championship which he led most of the way.
Piastri's 2025 F1 season finished with seven wins, 16 podiums and six Pole Positions.
