Jochen Mass, born on September 30, 1946, in Dorfen, Germany, is a former Formula One driver who competed in 114 Grand Prix races between 1973 and 1982. He is considered as one of the most versatile and consistent drivers of his time.
Mass began his racing career in the late 1960s and early 1970s, competing in various sports car and touring car races. In 1971, he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Helmut Marko, driving a Porsche 917K. He continued to have success in sports car racing throughout the 1970s, winning the Daytona 24 Hours in 1976 and 1981 and the Sebring 12 Hours in 1977 and 1980.
Mass made his Formula One debut in 1973, driving for Surtees at the Spanish grand prix. He moved to McLaren in 1974, where he stayed for three seasons. During this period, he achieved three podium finishes, including a second-place finish at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix.
Mass joined the German ATS team in 1977 and then moved to the French team, Ligier, in 1978. He scored his first and only Formula One victory at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, where he held off Niki Lauda's Ferrari to take the win. He finished his Formula One career with the March team in 1982.
Despite not winning a world championship, Mass was highly respected by his fellow drivers and teams for his technical knowledge and smooth driving style. He was also known for his endurance racing success, which earned him the nickname "Mr. Le Mans."
After his retirement from racing, Mass remained involved in the sport as a commentator and team manager. He was also a regular participant in historic racing events, including the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
