Since the 2014 Formula 1 season, the FIA has used Super Licence penalty points to penalise drivers for certain on-track offences. When issuing a sporting penalty, the FIA stewards may also add penalty points to a driver’s Super Licence.

If a driver accumulates 12 penalty points within a 12-month period, they will be suspended from the following Grand Prix. Once the suspension has been served, those 12 points are removed from the driver’s Super Licence.

Penalty points normally remain on a driver’s Super Licence for 12 months from the date they were issued. Each set of points therefore expires individually on the 12-month anniversary of the offence.

Every point a driver has ever been given, added up. This keeps counting through a race ban, because those points were handed out. The peak is a different number: the highest total that stood on the licence at any one moment, which is how close that driver ever came to a suspension.

F1 penalty points: frequently asked questions

How many penalty points lead to a race ban in F1?
Twelve. A driver who reaches twelve penalty points on their FIA Super Licence within a rolling twelve month period is suspended for the next Grand Prix, after which all twelve points are removed from the licence.
How long do F1 penalty points stay on a licence?
Exactly twelve months. Each point is removed on the twelve month anniversary of the incident it was given for, one by one, so a total can fall without a race being run.
Do penalty points reset at the end of the season?
No. This is the most common misunderstanding about the system. Penalty points run on a rolling twelve month window and cross the winter break, so a point picked up in November still counts the following March.

The licence a driver needs to race in Formula 1. It is issued by the FIA and earned through results in junior categories, a minimum age and a set number of qualifying points. Penalty points sit on that licence, which is why they follow the driver between teams.
Do penalty points affect the drivers' championship?
No. Penalty points and championship points are two separate systems that share a word. Penalty points never come off a championship total; the only thing they build towards is a race ban.
How many penalty points can one incident cost?
The stewards decide per incident, and there is no fixed tariff. The heaviest single penalty currently active is worth 2 points; one and two point penalties are the most common.
