Rafael Câmara Biography

Brazil's Rising Formula 1 Star

Rafael Câmara will make his Formula 1 debut with Haas in 2027. A product of the Ferrari Driver Academy and one of the most accomplished young talents to emerge from the junior categories in recent years, Câmara has built his reputation on exceptional qualifying speed, controlled aggression and an impressive ability to adapt to new machinery.

With the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship and 2025 FIA Formula 3 title already under his belt, the Brazilian entered 2026 as one of the brightest prospects on the road to Formula 1. His performances in Formula 2 soon attracted serious attention, ultimately earning him a multi-year contract with Haas to replace Esteban Ocon for the 2027 season.

Early Life and Karting Career

Motorsport runs in Câmara's family. His grandmother, Niege Rossiter, was a pioneering figure in motor racing in Recife during the 1960s, long before her grandson began dreaming of a career behind the wheel.

Câmara's introduction to karting came through his father, who initially took his older brother racing. When his brother lost interest, Rafael was eager to take his place. He began karting at the age of six and quickly demonstrated the natural speed that would come to define his early career.

His progress eventually took him from Brazil to Europe's fiercely competitive international karting scene. In 2021, he won both the WSK Champions Cup and WSK Super Masters Series, while finishing runner-up to future Formula 1 driver Kimi Antonelli in the CIK-FIA European Karting Championship.

Those results helped establish Câmara as one of the most promising young drivers of his generation and brought him to the attention of Ferrari's talent scouts.

Formula 4: A Promising Start with Ferrari

Câmara graduated to single-seater racing in 2022, beginning his journey through the junior formulae with Prema Racing and the support of the Ferrari Driver Academy.

His first season was ambitious, featuring campaigns in three different Formula 4 championships. He finished runner-up in the Formula 4 UAE Championship and secured third place in both Italian Formula 4 and ADAC Formula 4.

Although he narrowly missed out on a championship, his ability to compete near the front across different circuits and conditions demonstrated considerable potential.

Ferrari clearly agreed. Câmara continued his development within the Italian manufacturer's junior programme, alongside another emerging talent, Oliver Bearman, whose own progress would eventually intersect with the Brazilian's Formula 1 ambitions.

Formula Regional: The First Major Championship

In 2023, Câmara stepped up to Formula Regional, competing in both the Middle Eastern and European championships.

He finished third in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship and fifth in the highly competitive European series. While his outright speed was rarely in doubt, he still needed to turn promising performances into consistent championship results.

Rather than immediately progressing to Formula 3, Câmara returned to Formula Regional for another season in 2024. It proved a decisive move.

After another third-place finish in the Middle East, he dominated the Formula Regional European Championship with Prema Racing, claiming seven victories on his way to the title.

The championship was a significant breakthrough. Câmara had demonstrated that he possessed more than raw speed: he could sustain a title challenge, manage pressure and deliver consistently throughout a demanding season.

Formula 3: A Record-Breaking Rookie Champion

Câmara joined Trident for the 2025 FIA Formula 3 Championship and wasted little time establishing himself as the driver to beat.

He won the opening Feature Race in Melbourne from pole position and repeated the achievement in Bahrain. Further victories followed in Barcelona and Budapest, where he secured the championship with one round remaining.

His statistics were remarkable. Four Feature Race victories and five pole positions made him one of the most dominant qualifiers in the championship's history, with his five poles setting a new FIA Formula 3 single-season record.

Perhaps most impressive was how quickly he adapted to unfamiliar circuits. His ability to find the limit almost immediately became a defining characteristic, particularly in qualifying, where small margins often separate the front row from the midfield.

By the end of 2025, Câmara had firmly established himself among the leading candidates for a future Formula 1 seat.

Formula 2: Proving He Belongs at the Front

For 2026, Câmara joined Invicta Racing in Formula 2, following a route previously taken by fellow Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto.

Once again, his qualifying performances stood out. However, his rookie season also brought lessons in race management, tyre conservation and dealing with setbacks.

A costly mistake while leading in Monaco denied him a potential victory, but his response was impressive. At the following round in Barcelona, he delivered a measured drive built around excellent tyre management to claim his first Formula 2 Feature Race win.

Further victories followed at Spa-Francorchamps and Baku, with the Belgian and Azerbaijan results strengthening his championship challenge.

By October 2026, Câmara had accumulated five pole positions and three Feature Race victories. With two rounds remaining, he led the championship on 207 points, seven ahead of Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov.

Winning the Formula 2 title would complete an extraordinary run of consecutive junior championship successes, but his Formula 1 future had already been secured.

Formula 1: Haas Secures Ferrari's Brazilian Talent

On 15 October 2026, Haas officially confirmed Câmara as one of its drivers for the 2027 Formula 1 World Championship, signing the Brazilian to a multi-year agreement as Esteban Ocon's replacement.

The announcement followed an important evaluation at Portimão in August, where Câmara drove the team's 2025 VF-25 as part of its Testing of Previous Cars programme.

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu was particularly impressed by the youngster's ability to adapt quickly, produce competitive lap times and work effectively with the engineers despite limited preparation time.

It was an important audition. Haas had evaluated several candidates for the vacancy, including drivers with significantly more experience, but Câmara's combination of outright pace, maturity and development potential ultimately made him the preferred choice.

His promotion also strengthened the connection between Haas and Ferrari, which has supported his career through its Driver Academy. He will join the Formula 1 grid alongside fellow Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto, giving Brazil two representatives at the pinnacle of motorsport.

Driving Style and Formula 1 Potential

Câmara's greatest strength is his ability to extract speed from a car almost immediately. His qualifying records in Formula 3 and Formula 2 demonstrate a driver who is comfortable approaching the limit, even on unfamiliar circuits.

Yet outright speed is only part of the picture.

His progression through the junior categories has shown an increasingly mature approach to racing. Setbacks have generally been followed by improvements, while his championship-winning campaigns have demonstrated the consistency required to compete at the highest level.

There is still plenty to learn. Formula 1 brings considerably greater technical complexity, intense competition and expectations that can overwhelm even highly successful junior champions.

But Câmara arrives with an unusually convincing racing record and the backing of two established Formula 1 organisations in Ferrari and Haas.

For a young Brazilian who began karting in Recife, the journey to Formula 1 has been remarkable. The challenge now is to prove that the qualities which made him a champion on the junior ladder can translate into success against the world's best drivers.
