🎯 Piastri Stuns Jeddah as Verstappen Falters – 2025 Saudi Arabian GP Race Report
JEDDAH – In a Grand Prix that had just about everything—collisions, penalties, team politics, and tyre strategy twists—Oscar Piastri emerged as the surprise conqueror of the Saudi Arabian desert, taking a brilliant victory ahead of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. Round five of the 2025 Formula 1 season will be remembered as the race where McLaren’s young Aussie officially arrived as a title contender.
💥 Lights Out, Fireworks On
From the very first turn, chaos reigned. Verstappen, starting from pole, went full elbows-out into Turn 1, squeezing Piastri off the racing line. The Red Bull man may have claimed the early lead, but he also claimed a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly collided behind them, immediately triggering a Safety Car and ending both their races before they even got going. Classic first-lap carnage on a street circuit.
🧠 Strategy Games & Intra-Team Tensions
Once the race resumed, it was clear we were in for a tactical thriller. Piastri shadowed Verstappen through the first stint, managing his tyres with a calm beyond his years. The McLaren pit wall then pulled the trigger on an undercut—albeit with a slightly sluggish 3.4s stop—and it paid off when Verstappen finally served his penalty and emerged behind both Piastri and Hamilton.
Meanwhile, Lando Norris, starting from P10 after his Q3 shunt, had opted for the hard tyres and began carving his way through the field. McLaren had a dilemma: should they let Norris and Piastri swap places when Lando was showing pace mid-race? They didn’t, and Zak Brown admitted post-race that things might’ve gone smoother with a shuffle. Regardless, the orange team walked away grinning.
🏁 The Final Push
Piastri led the final stages with Verstappen lurking uncomfortably close. Traffic—particularly a reluctant Stroll and rookie Bortoleto—gave the Aussie a few tense moments. But he kept his cool, managing the gap brilliantly while Verstappen, perhaps unusually quiet on the radio, seemed resigned to second. Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, made his mediums sing for Ferrari and muscled past George Russell to grab a surprise podium—Ferrari’s first of the year.
Behind them, Norris launched a late charge on Leclerc but fell short by just over a second, finishing a very respectable P4. Russell, Antonelli, Hamilton, Sainz, Albon, and Hadjar rounded out the points in a race where everyone had to fight for every inch.
📣 Post-Race Soundbites
Oscar Piastri:
“Looking for a couch!” he joked, drenched in sweat and ticker tape. “Once I got on the inside of Turn 1, I knew I had to make it stick. That move won me the race.”
Max Verstappen:
“I’ll keep it short. I love the track, the fans, but it is what it is,” said Max, not-so-subtly still fuming about the penalty.
Charles Leclerc:
“I didn’t expect this result. The car wasn’t great in quali, but we nailed the race. I thought I’d be defending from Antonelli all race long.”
🏆 A New Championship Leader Emerges
With this win—his third podium in a row and second consecutive victory—Oscar Piastri now leads the Drivers’ Championship. Yes, really. Ten points clear of teammate Norris and twelve ahead of Verstappen. McLaren haven’t led both Championships in years, but here we are in 2025, and Woking’s finest are the team to beat.
🇺🇸 Next Stop: Miami Heat
Formula 1 now heads across the Atlantic for its first visit Stateside this season. Miami awaits with glitz, glamour, and the potential for more McLaren magic. Will Verstappen strike back? Will Norris get redemption on American soil? And can Ferrari keep their momentum alive?
For now, though, Saudi Arabia belongs to Piastri.

Fortunately, Max's corner-cut ultimately didn't prove decisive, but yet another proof that race control should order an immediate swap or during the SC period in this case specifically.
Antonelli at least let Leclerc by immediately as did Alonso shortly afterwards.
Lawson's 10-second time penalty was questionable because he didn't necessarily manage to keep position because of such a marginal off.
Bortoleto was lucky he didn't cause a big accident with his totally unnecessary last-minute leftward movement.
The last corner again featured DRS tactics, which won't happen ever again, although Hamilton risked a rear-end collision the second time around.
The Gasly-Tsunoda collision was a racing incident, but Gasly could've avoided the contact in his positioning.
Young Piastri is quite the talent…quick off the line, fair and brave in T1, and managed the race pace to win. Look forward to he and MV racing it out over the season for the WDC.
Bravo Oscar, Dear Max that was a mistake of your own doing, and he knows it, bless the great one, Leclerc fought like a dog well done, Hannah Louise on the other hand didnt, saying the cars capable of 3rd
but im not...., but over all if Max expected to be 3rd and lose even more points to the leader he didnt, so a good result that should have been better, I actually think the very short hold on the grid to the green light caught him out, but really thats no excuse, Max and Rb should be encouraged that Mcl arent unbeatable, Ferrari, I hope they kept the receipt for Missy, but I hear Mercedes are saying No refunds or Returns. Another pointless race for Alonso , get your office furniture ordered for your office at AM Hq for next year
Yes your right Shropp in everything you say but some one has to Stick up for Max.. Johnny Herbert is now saying that Max was disrespectful on the podium because he drank his champagne instead of celebrating with it,, what a pillock that man is, Max is disliked because he's not British. If sir Lulu wins at Silverstone this year >M never watching F1 again ever.
Yes a daft thing for JH to say, and ill say one thing Max acts more like Bullish Brit than Lucy ever has,and yes hes hated but you cant fault the application in his driving, and id say its a pretty safe bet the Dame wont win at SS lol,Max is for me, Senna-like in his interviews and attitude to the Fia very rebellious, and Lando acts like hes been mothered too much as a child, and Mark W doing a great job with Oscar, hard as granite.
Yupp.
Great to see Williams with two cars in the top ten, sadly most people are only interested in the Mac v RB fight and slagging off LH.
Obviously like learning to drive a road car it takes longer to learn the older you are so no surprise that Lewis is finding it difficult to adjust at 40 where the difference between fabulous and crap is less than half a second.
BUT shes the Queen, the wisest and greatest person in F1 , I do have sympathy, but for the fans of Ferrari, Ive said for years shes a Prima donna, and now shes in Italy how ironic, I am a bit confused Blo are you saying we should feel sympathetic about her troubles, make allowances perhaps ?
Nope, no one gives a damn what any of us think anyway except ourselves. I think Max’s attitude to the media and the fia is correct and commendable, good for him.
By the by, I have seen Max quoted as saying “the eight times world champion Lewis Hamilton”, probably lies or is he so pissed off with the fia he’s accepting their admitted mistake gave him 2021 to rub in some of their crap decisions.
Can't help you Blo if your going to live in the past, doesn't do anyone any good.
Stroppy, are you and Don the same person?
Blo are you stalking me, I didnt know you cared so much..!
Not unless you’re really Angela as well as Donny
Johnny the burk Herbert is now insinuating what Max should do in the future,, does this guy get paid for what I've already said on the forum. My message to Johnny the burk Herbert is, leave Mav alone he doesn't need your opinion go back to your fave sir Lulu heaven knows I'm sure you could tell him how to better his future.
Yes but Don, JH is getting paid to give his opinion like all the other pundits. If you don’t like it you don’t have to read or listen to it.
But hes still a burk, nomatter how much hes paid regarding Max, it seems since Sky didnt renew his contract hes trying to please his new tabloid employers, the press vultures however are beginning to circle around Dame Louise, they smell blood and a bigger story, the pressure will only mount, wait till Imola, the Tifosi will be chanting Bearman in the Ferrari Now...!
Trouble is Blo I care about the drivers, your saying if I don't like what they say I should turn a blind eye, wow, never done that in my whole life, faced up to bullies @ school I'm now 80 years old & I still stand up for people that I feel are being put on & always will, getting penalised by the FIA is enough drivers don't need people who get paid to rub it in
Jh I would imagine is primarily employed to write F1 for a UK tabloid, and there fore the same old sky rhetoric Anti Max and pro Brit, it is noticeable that various pundits are saying its time for the dame to go , BUT not the sky pundits, i wonder why that is? I understand why they arent, Miss Hamilton has a lot of uk fans who are sky subscribers but, same old argument are they impartial NO, nomatter how much they say they are Imo
I suppose I just get niggled when I hear or read articles about F1 drivers written or spoken by ex F1 drivers Jolyon Palmer, MARTIN Brundle, Damon Hill etc who have had their moments & know what F1 racing is about, different characters, different car control different management these pundits seem to forget what it's like when they can make money talking about what this driver should have done & what that driver should have done probably I just don't like ex F1 drivers criticising the drivers of today.
