A New Designation for a Fresh Start

The Alfa Romeo Racing C41, skipping the C40 designation in a deliberate internal numbering decision, represented the team's interpretation of a competitive 2021 package. Retaining the Ferrari power unit and developing the aerodynamic concept from its predecessor, the C41 showed early promise in testing before the season's realities clarified its limitations. Alfa Romeo finished ninth in the Constructors' Championship with thirteen points, a result that masked some genuinely impressive individual performances but reflected the intensely competitive nature of the midfield in a season dominated by the Mercedes-Red Bull title battle at the front.

Räikkönen's Farewell Season

The 2021 campaign had a bittersweet quality for Alfa Romeo fans worldwide, as it marked Kimi Räikkönen's final season in Formula 1, his 349th and last start coming at Abu Dhabi in November. The Iceman had announced his retirement mid-season, citing a desire to spend more time with his family, and the news prompted an outpouring of affection from all corners of the paddock. Räikkönen's journey, from his debut in 2001 to a World Championship in 2007 and an extraordinary comeback career spanning two different stints, was one of the sport's most remarkable narratives. He missed two races late in the season due to a positive COVID-19 test, with Robert Kubica filling in as substitute.

Giovinazzi's Last Stand

Antonio Giovinazzi also departed Alfa Romeo at the end of 2021, when the team confirmed Valtteri Bottas would be joining from Mercedes for 2022 alongside Zhou Guanyu. Giovinazzi's final season was arguably his most complete, demonstrating genuine race pace and extracting points finishes that justified the faith placed in him.
