Haas VF-21: The Development Year
The Haas VF-21 was arguably the most deliberate tactical sacrifice in recent Formula 1 history. With the wholesale technical revolution of 2022 already on the horizon, team principal Guenther Steiner and the Haas leadership made the bold, and controversial, decision to spend the entirety of 2021 developing almost exclusively for the new regulations, running a virtually unmodified version of the 2020 car. Ferrari power units continued, and an entirely new driver line-up of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin replaced the departing Grosjean and Magnussen.
A Year of Zero Points
The 2021 season was painful viewing for Haas fans. The VF-21 consistently qualified at the back of the grid and finished outside the points in every race, leaving Haas with zero points and last place in the Constructors' Championship. Mick Schumacher, son of the legendary Michael Schumacher and making his Formula 1 debut, showed moments of genuine promise, his careful, methodical approach to learning the car and managing tyres was evident even in an uncompetitive machine. Nikita Mazepin struggled more with the car and attracted attention for incidents both on and off the track.
Despite the results, the team was philosophically committed to the strategy. Every aerodynamic concept, every mechanical setup learning, every data point from 2021 was building the foundations of what would become the competitive VF-22. The gamble would ultimately pay off handsomely.
