Elio de Angelis was an Italian Formula One driver who graced the sport during the 1970s and 80s. He was born on March 26, 1958, in Rome, Italy. Growing up, Elio was passionate about racing and cars, and he started competing in karting races when he was just ten years old.
In the late 70s, Elio made his debut in Formula Three, and his natural talent behind the wheel earned him a seat in Formula Two. By 1980, Elio had caught the attention of the Lotus team, and he signed a contract to become a teammate of the legendary Mario Andretti.
In his first season with Lotus, Elio quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with, winning his first Grand Prix at the 1982 Austrian Grand Prix. His success continued into the 1983 season, where he won two more Grand Prix races and finished third in the championship.
Elio's greatest season was in 1985, where he secured two more victories and finished second in the championship behind Alain Prost. However, tragedy struck in 1986 during a testing session at the Paul Ricard Circuit in France. Elio's Lotus car suffered a suspension failure, and he crashed at high speed, resulting in his untimely death at just 28 years old.
