A Season of Disruption and Rebuilding

The AlphaTauri AT04 entered 2023 as one of the grid's least predictable packages. The car launched with Nyck de Vries alongside Yuki Tsunoda following the Dutchman's outstanding substitute drive at Monza the previous year, but early-season results were deeply disappointing. AlphaTauri's performance window was narrow and the team struggled to translate its design philosophy into lap time on circuits with varying characteristics. The AT04's aerodynamic concept faced particular difficulties in low-speed sections, and the team found themselves regularly fighting at the bottom of the midfield rather than in the positions their resources might have suggested.

De Vries Replaced by Ricciardo

The season's most significant development came at the Hungarian grand prix, when Nyck de Vries was released from his seat after just ten starts. His performances had failed to match expectations, a harsh but unavoidable judgment in an environment where results define everything. In his place came one of the most familiar faces in Formula 1: Daniel Ricciardo, who had spent the early part of 2023 as Red Bull's reserve driver and third driver following his difficult final season at McLaren. Ricciardo's return was greeted with enormous enthusiasm from fans worldwide, and he brought with him the experience of a driver who had won eight Grands Prix and possessed deep technical insight into car development.

Tsunoda's Resilience

Through the turbulence of driver changes and fluctuating form, Yuki Tsunoda maintained his position and continued to demonstrate why Red Bull regarded him highly enough to keep him in the programme. His speed remained a constant talking point, even when the car beneath him failed to provide the platform his talent deserved. The AT04 season was ultimately one of consolidation and change, laying the groundwork for a rebranding that would arrive with 2024: AlphaTauri was to become Visa Cash App RB Formula One Team, or Racing Bulls, for the new campaign.
